Overview
The 2027 Volkswagen Golf R is a compact hot hatchback and the hardcore, AWD version of the GTI. It has the same turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, but has been cranked up to 328 hp and gains 4Motion AWD, enabling the R to bolt to 60 MPH in 4.6 seconds. Its torque-vectoring rear diff can help it rotate in corners and give it a RWD handling feel. It drives with pleasing sophistication and decorum. Underneath all of that, it’s still the same practical hatch we know and love, with space for up to five and a decent trunk behind a practical liftback.

What’s New for 2027
The 2027 Golf R is unchanged, except that the Black Edition returns to the lineup this year. It comes with blacked-out exterior trim, badging, and darkened headlight housings, while its exhaust outlets, wheels, brake callipers, and mirrors are also black. Both this new trim and the existing standard R can be ordered with the carry-over Euro Style package, which reduces weight by 80 pounds by deleting the sunroof and fitting ArtVelours sports front seats and a titanium Akrapovič exhaust.

Exterior
The classic Golf shape with the thick C-pillar and chunky proportions is still there, but the R model is picked out by unique detailing, forged Warmenau alloy wheels, large front air intakes, various R-specific touches, quad exhausts, a rear roof spoiler, and blue brake callipers. The exhaust can further be up-specced to a titanium Akrapovič unit as part of the Euro Style package, which also deletes the sunroof in a quest to cut 80 pounds of weight. The Black Edition blacks out all the exterior trim, along with the wheels and badging.

Interior
Interior quality is good, with the near-premium impression reinforced by standard Nappa leather upholstery, which is replaced with ArtVelours sports front seats and cloth upholstery as part of the Euro Style package. Rear-seat space is snug but acceptable for a compact hatch, while the trunk accommodates just about 20 cu-ft.
Standard features include heated front and outboard rear seats, ventilated front seats, a power driver’s seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 3-zone climate control, shift paddles, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 12.9-inch touchscreen with navigation, a head-up display, and a Harman Kardon audio system.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Strong turbo engine
- Effective torque-vectoring AWD
- Generous standard feature set
- Practical hatchback with useful cargo flexibility
- Efficient for the performance level
Cons:
- No manual option
- Touchscreen-heavy controls distracting
- Expensive for the segment
- Limited personalization options
Verdict
The Golf R succeeds because it stays true to the Golf formula of quality and everyday usability, with the added spice of 328-hp performance, all-weather AWD, and that torque-vectoring rear diff to make the driver part of the experience. It’s already fully equipped with leather, navigation, Harman Kardon audio, heated and ventilated seats, and a suite of driver assists, so there are precious few options to tick, and we’d stick with the standard car at below $50K for the best value.
