A capable commuter for very little coin

If you’re in need of an affordable and nimble SUV for urban duties, the Hyundai Venue is a solid choice. Even in its base SE trim, the Venue offers a great set of standard features on top of its roomy interior, which contrasts with the subcompact exterior dimensions. Even if you fully load up the Venue, it costs less than $25,000. Not many cars have those bragging rights.

The exterior styling of the Venue is a good blend of urban and outdoorsy with a textured mesh grille, attractive DRLs, and separate twin projector beam headlamps beneath. The Venue comes in three trim levels: the base SE at $20,200, the SEL at $22,200, and the top trim Limited at $23,450. Competitors in the subcompact SUV segment include the Mazda CX-30, Buick Encore GX, Kia Soul, and Nissan Kicks. The Venue’s base price is lower than all of them, and Hyundai is offering a great lease deal in September.

The cabin is deceptively roomy for its compact exterior dimensions. Both rows are comfortable, and the seat cushions are a nice blend of comfortable and supportive. The dash, center stack, and center console are simple and straightforward with a crisp gauge display, excellent physical controls for climate and audio, and a traditional shift knob for easy gear changes. The Venue’s total passenger volume is 110.6 cubic feet, with the front row providing 43.3 inches of legroom and the second row delivering 34.3 inches of legroom. The cargo space measures 18.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a total of 31.9 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded flat. The rear seatback can fold down with its 60/40 split for added convenience.

Final thoughts

There’s a lot to love about this little guy, and the interior is deceptively big for the Venue’s small footprint. Its compact size, upright driving position, good fuel economy, and robust standard feature set make the Venue a real value, and the September lease deal makes it even more appealing. Before signing the lease agreement, review the costs due at signing, including taxes and registration fees, potential dealer costs, etc.
