For months now, the
Electric GT Championship has been building up to its first race, without actually having one on the official calendar. We’ve seen videos of the race-prepped Tesla Model S development car
in action, been teased by the
P100D upgrade, and been filled in on the growing driver roster,
which includes the likes of green racing favorite
Leilani Münter. Finally, we have an actual race date to look forward to, as EGT has announced it will kick off its inaugural season with a double header at Circuit Paul Ricard on Nov. 25-26, 2017.
Each day of
Electric Grand Prix France in Le Castellet will consist of a practice session, qualifying, and two rounds of racing totaling 68 laps around the 2.387-mile course. Similar to what
Formula E does on its race weekends, EGT will host a festival to entertain and inform racegoers about electric vehicle technology and sustainability.
Following the race in France, Electric GT will continue in January 2018 (location to be determined), then head to Portugal in March, Italy in April, Germany in May, Belgium in June, Netherlands in July, UK in September, and Spain in October, pending approval by the FIA and other institutions involved.
Drivers will race identical, race-spec Tesla Model S P100D EVs. The Electric GT treatment removes 1,100 pounds from the car, which helps its achieve a 0-62 mile-per-hour sprint of just 2.1 seconds. It features a race-tuned suspension and brakes, bespoke Pirelli tires, and safety equipment from OMP. Aerodynamic improvements include a front splitter and rear wing that produce 122 pounds of downforce at the nose, and 203 pounds at the rear.
