Overview
The 2025 Volkswagen Golf R compact hot hatchback is the most powerful production Golf ever, packing a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 328 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Paired exclusively with a quick-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive with rear torque vectoring, it grips the road and doesn’t let go.
It’s compact, at just 169.1 inches long and about 3,397 pounds, and sprints to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds while returning an EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined. This is the kind of car that punches above its weight, blending everyday practicality with performance that can put a grin on your face every single time you hit the skinny pedal.

What’s New for 2025
The Golf R receives a substantial mid-cycle update for 2025. Output rises by 13 hp to 328 hp from the revised EA888 evo4 turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, while the 6-speed manual is dropped, leaving the 7-speed DSG automatic as the only transmission. Styling changes include revised LED headlights, an illuminated front grille and Volkswagen logo, and a reshaped front bumper with larger air intakes. Volkswagen also fits new standard 19-inch forged wheels that are about 20% lighter than before.
Inside, the Golf R gets a new 12.9-inch touchscreen with faster MIB3 software, and physical buttons return to the steering wheel. The lineup also adds a new Black Edition with gloss-black wheels and carbon-fiber trim. The optional Euro Style Package still brings an Akrapovič titanium exhaust, fabric seats, and a sunroof delete, reducing weight by about 80 pounds.
