Toyota and Ford announced major recalls today for pickups and SUVs. Ford is recalling 3.8 million trucks and SUVs from the 1994-2002 model-years for a cruise control switch that is suspected of causing engine fires. The recall includes the company's F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Bronco. The NHTSA has received more than 550 complaints related to engine fires, and three deaths have been cited in news reports and lawsuits in Arkansas, Georgia, and Iowa.
Toyota also issued a recall for 978,000 of its pickups and SUVs. The recall is to address a potential failure in the steering system. Toyota will begin notifying owners in mid-September. The affected vehicles include MY 1990-1995 4Runners, MY 1989-1995 4WD pickups, and MY 1993-1998 T-100 pickups.
