Nissan Leaf Nismo RC - Click above to watch video after the jump

Nissan has yet to figure out exactly where the company will campaign its new Leaf RC racer, but that hasn't stopped the engineers behind the Japanese automaker's Nismo effort from getting the machine out on track for a little shake-down action.

With its sexy carbon fiber bodywork, three-door layout and silent electric drivetrain, the car looks plenty sinister in its element. And while the vehicle's new skin is both longer and wider than the street-going Leaf, the race car uses the same drivetrain as what's whirring around on public streets right now, though it's worth noting that everything has been shifted closer to the passenger cell to improve weight balance.

Nissan says that ideally, the company would eventually like to replace traditional ICE racing with EVs and that it would also like to branch out into other forms of motorsports that have never been explored. Those include city races where typical race cars are too loud to compete and indoor events where a zero-emission vehicle could truly shine. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.

ballin' would love to see a new series of EV races pop up, especially if this brings races indoors and other places previously thought impossible for motorsports

I'm not a big fan of hatch backs, but man that car looks hot for a modded Leaf. I hope they will somehow make this type of model available to consumers, the sooner the better.

With a mechanical regenerative flywheel, it seems like this could be a potent racer.

So, any particular reason my "most superfluous vehicle, ever" comment got deleted?

Awww, one of my favorite things about motorsport is the sound of the norse god of thunder that emanates from each machine. Still, it'd be pretty cool if Nissan did a homologation special based on the Leaf. The car needs a serious injection of badassery, and making some sort of street version out of this would do it.

I like the idea of an EV series or something similar... but I just don't know how I would feel about going to watch a race and not really be able to "hear" it.

You'd hear it. Electric motors at 10,000 + RPM are not quite by any means.

EV racing is just completely boring. The whine of an electric motor just isn't the same as exploding fuel. Driver's chatting with the other drivers? drivers chatting with the audience? The last thing I want to see in racing competition is for it to be turned into a reality show. I'm not very forward thinking on this subject.

I wish they or anyone would make a 3 door hatch thats not a hybrid or electic car. Dont know why hatches these days all must have five doors???
