Volkswagen Italdesign concepts – Click either image for high-res gallery

Giorgetto Giuigiaro and his Italdesign studio have a long history of collaboration with the Volkswagen Group. In addition to having designed the original Golf and Scirocco, Guigiaro has penned a whole slew of showcars for the German automotive empire from the Volkswagen W12 concept to the numerous Seat designs, to say nothing of all the Lamborghini and Bugatti models over the years. But the relationship between Italdesign and Volkswagen grew that much closer Volkswagen Italdesign concept 2when the latter acquired the former last May. Now close to a year later, we have our first glimpse at the first product of that collaboration in the form of two concept cars.

The pair were apparently leaked from the European patent registry and could be Giugiaro's vision of the form which the next-generation Golf and Polo might take. Or they could represent the next Scirocco and the production Up! urban runabout. Word has it that they're electric powered, and could be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next week. We'll have to sit tight to find out for sure, but in the meantime you can check out the images of both in the gallery below.

loooks exactly like the fiat grande punto which is a giuigiaro design too. these design houses are really lame, a kid with 3dsmax does a better job nowadays.

I fell in love with--and went right out and purchased--the first Giugiaro-designed Scirocco, back in 1975. This (possible Scirocco) design is interesting, and OK, but it doesn't set my heart racing like that '75 did.

Then again, I'm 36 years older now...

My first VW was also a 1975 Scirocco (orange) purchased over 30 years ago. After swapping out the troublesome Zenith carburetor with a 2-barrel Weber downdraft and changed the points to electronic ignition, the car was a blast to drive for about six years until a tractor-trailer hit it when it decided to occupy the same lane I was driving in on a 4-lane highway. Man, I miss that car...

This looks like a rough draft...

Looks like his Fiat Punto, wassup wit the big G and pointy noses?

Cmon Giuigiaro... is that all you got? Looks horribly outdated. Not awful, just MEH.

Wow - You guys really are fickle...
...first you pan the deSilva Jetta & Passat as "boring", then you fail to appreciate the creativity and details here.

Don't you see that those red "Pinstripes" are full-length LED side-marker lamps?
...and the lack of taillamp assemblies in the bodywork indicates to me that the stripes in the mid-glass mounted spoilers are the taillamps.

I'm not sure that I like the mid-glass panel in the "Rabbit", as it seems to be right where I'd want to look when I turn my head, but it's definitely a better way to integrate the mail-slot type of window than in the earlier Giugiaro-penned DeLorean and Subaru SVX - give it a more conventional window profile while keeping the dropped waistline and I'd like it alot more.

Isn't this some evolved version of the Proton Emas concept?
I was actually thinking that it looks kinda like the Lotus City Car concept. Especially from the rear.

Is it my eyes or Giugiaro concepts do really look outdated? These two, in particular, could have appeared in 1990.
first thing that popped to my mind was the last iteration of the Lincoln MKX
        • 3 Years Ago
        Exactly what I was thinking.

They would have been fine if it was 90's, but the world has moved on! The horrible render quality/color and whole representation certainly don't help, but the form and graphics are so.. meh~~~~~~~~
