Gaywheels.com announced Top 10 Most Researched Vehicles

Gaywheels.com has released a Top 10 list of the most researched vehicles on its site based on statistics gathered from April 1st through June 30th. The site acknowledges in a press release that there are many stereotypes about what the gay community drives, but that the community itself is as diverse as the rest of the population. True enough, and while some of the vehicles that landed on the list have in the past been considered as favorites of the gay community, many of the models would no doubt land on any Most Researched list. Topping the list is the Saturn Sky roadster, which has been garnering everyone's attention as of late. Here's the rest...
- Saturn Sky
- Toyota Yaris
- Dodge Caliber
- Volkswagen Jetta
- Toyota Camry
- Audi A3
- Toyota Prius
- Saab 9-3 (sedan and convertible)
- Pontiac G6 (sedan, coupe and convertible)
- Mazda MX-5

Gaywheels.com Top 10 Vehicles:
GLBT Consumers Loyal to Gay-Friendly Auto Brands
ATLANTA, GA – The sporty new 2007 Saturn Sky two-seat convertible has generated the most interest among gay and lesbian car shoppers and enthusiasts, according to Gaywheels.com, the first automotive website specifically targeted to the GLBT community. Revealing for the first time specifically which vehicles the GLBT consumer is considering, Gaywheels.com has released its list of Top 10 Most Researched Vehicles.
"There are many stereotypes about what we as a community drive and to a certain extent, stereotypes are based on the most visible members of our community. The reality is that we live and work everywhere in the U.S. and we are as diverse as the rest of the population," says Joe LaMuraglia, founder of Gaywheels.com. "With that said, the vehicles that the Gaywheels.com user is researching is markedly different than that of other automotive research websites, while still reflecting the diverse interests in our community"
Gaywheels.com Top 10 Most Researched Vehicles
1 Saturn Sky
2 Toyota Yaris
3 Dodge Caliber
4 Volkswagen Jetta
5 Toyota Camry
6 Audi A3
7 Toyota Prius
8 Saab 9-3 (sedan and convertible)
9 Pontiac G6 (sedan, coupe and convertible)
10 Mazda MX-5
Although information, specifications and pricing on all new car and truck models are available on Gaywheels.com, each vehicle on the Most Researched list is from a gay-friendly brand. Gaywheels.com classifies all vehicle manufacturers as gay friendly or not based on their corporate policies for offering domestic-partner benefits to their employees in the U.S. "Gay consumers as a group are more loyal to companies that demonstrate fairness and equality to the GLBT community," LaMuraglia emphasizes. "Gaywheels.com's Top 10 vehicles – and even Top 20 for that matter – are all from automakers that are gay friendly. This clearly shows that when armed with facts about vehicles and the companies that build them, gay consumers are more likely to shop and spend with brands that support their community."
Supporting the assumptions that the average gay person has a higher discretionary income, no children and is more apt to purchase a sports car, there are four convertibles on the list, and a two-seat roadster in the #1 position. "But notice that there are also inexpensive and fuel-efficient vehicles in the Top 10 – most notably the Toyota Yaris and Dodge Caliber," adds LaMuraglia. "The data also challenges the generalization that we as a group are only interested in luxury vehicles. There are only 2 luxury brands in the Top 10 and only 5 out of the Top 20 are luxury makes."
The Most Researched list is based on website statistics gathered from April 1 – June 30, 2006 from Gaywheels.com New Car section powered by Edmunds.com data.

I guess I can turn in my gay-card. None of these cars interests me.

What the hell does a persons sexual "preference" have to do with the cars they drive, anyway?

And Toyota seems to be the most popular with 3 models in Top 10.

Well Glenn, you found it interesting enough to look over the post. To answer your question, nothing, but... some people are curious as to what is being researched on their site.
You should take this oppurtunity for what it is, 10 more vehicles you can boycott. But wait a second! Isn't the car you drive on the list? Oh dear...

Wasn't the Chrysler commercial with the fairie and the stereotypical homosexual man for the Caliber? I remember there being an outcry in the gay community because of it...
Somewhat ironic.

I'm surprised the Ace and Gary mobile isn't on the list.

Just because it's most researched doesn't mean it's most purchased. It's likely that the Caliber was researched precisely because of the controversey, not despite of it. No irony there.

Dr. Woo, If I'm remembering correctly you are actually thinking of one person commenting on the advertisement. It was far from an outcry of a community. Most of the comments made about the commercial on Autoblog seemed to suggest that few gay people had any issue with the protrayl of the rugged, threatening thug turned harmless, country-club wuss.
Since almost every major car company (save Nissan) is considered "gay friendly", it is not at all surprising to see the Dodge Caliber on the list. As stated in the post, this could easily be the list of ten most researched vehicles at straightwheels.com

I've had my Miata for over six years now. It's got a little gay-stigma to it, so I'm really not surprised to see it on the list. But out of all the MX-5 people I know, only two of them are gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
It doesn't surprise me at all to see a Camry and Prius on the list either.

Well, I didn't do any research at Gay.com but my partner and I did purchase a 05 Toyota Prius and an 06 Saab 9-3 SportCombi. Both are on the list.
We gave up our Murano and BMW X3 for better mileage and lower car payments. It had nothing to do with precieved gay style.

Dearest posters,
We are so thrilled at this fabulous selection of vehicles that you have here.
We must look absolutely wonderful in our new vehicles and cannot have a moment where a nail is less than perfect or where we could be caught looking less than stunning. You know, a girl just has to look her best!
(note from lesbian staffer) Why was a Toyota 4x4 left off the list. Not one truck. Sexist pigs.
Of course, we would have added more hi-brow vehicles to this list as the Toyota Yaris is so hard to look fabulous in - we'd prefer a Lexus or two to be added to this list.
It warms our hearts that you butch men have plunked your hard earned dollars onto a Saturn Sky only to find out that it is really a pink car of choice.
Can you believe it?
Little do you boys know that when you drive the Saturn Sky you'll soon develop a craving for Show Tunes, color coordination, and hot sweaty
Oh, hold me back cause I cannot stand this heat.
Signed,

Dude, there was never an "outcry", I'm gay and I thought it was funny + if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?!
"3. What the hell does a persons sexual "preference" have to do with the cars they drive, anyway?"
-OK Glenn, the same could be said about cars making a political standpoint like your stupid bisexual Prius.
"10. Is Nissan anti-gay? (reference to #8)

Yeah it's http://www.motortrend.com

TheOne442,
No, Nissan is NOT anti-gay, they are just not considered "gay friendly". They do no have an anti-discrimination policy in their corporate hiring/firing practices and do not offer "domestic partner" benefits, but I would never interpret this to mean that they are hateful against gay people. I never meant to imply that Nissan was anti-gay, they simply lag behind other major corporations.
And I made up "straightwheels.com" to illustrate my point (and the blogger's) that the vehicles would be considered "most researched" by almost any large sample of Americans, including one that is the "opposite" of this sample.

Elliot,
I think that's what Glenn A. was getting at.
Really, what does it matter? A Sky is a Sky regardless of your orientation. All I know is I want one. The Red Line version, please.
But I can't get one right now. A wife, 2 kids and a Golden Retriever are well beyond the limits of the Sky's carrying capacity. But as soon as we can afford a third card, that one is mine.

Learn to spell if you're going to make fun of Toyotas.
Also, glad to know my parents own "gay cars". Now they should know why their son turned out gay. You really need to get out of that 12-year old mindset that calling things "gay" makes any sense.
In terms of the list, I can't say I'm interested in any of the cars on that list...when I trade in my TL i'll probably get an MDX or a Lexus GS.
