Jetta wagon delayed until 2007 or 2008

Volkswagen’s Jetta model has been carrying the company in North America for quite some time now, accounting for around 40% of the company’s sales in the U.S. and even more in Canada. You’d think that after debuting an all-new Jetta sedan this year that the wagon variant would not be far behind. Think again. Auto123 is reporting that VW execs have confirmed a Jetta wagon (the photo is an artist’s rendering), though they don’t know when it will be built. The article sites major retooling at VW’s Pueblo plant in Mexico as a possible reason for the delay. Another intriguing possibility is that VW is planning to differentiate the wagon from the sedan with the addition of 4Motion all-wheel drive, a sloping tailgate and a new name. Rumors also hint that the Jetta wagon may be the first VW to receive a new, high tech direct-injection motor that’s both turbochargedand supercharged. For these reasons and possibly others we have yet to learn, don’t expect a Jetta with a bigger booty until at least late 2006, maybe even later.
