With fuel prices on the rise, Japanese manufacturers are looking to throw their weight behind selling fuel efficient
subcompacts in the U.S. market. For instance, Toyota has killed the Echo and is importing the Yaris/Vitz in an
unadulterated hatchback form. A sedan variant will also be produced, but the significance of this move by Toyota should
not be ignored. Additionally, Nissan is introducing the Versa below the Sentra and is expected to bring the subcompact
Scion-fighting Cube to American shores in 2007. Honda is also bringing its Fit hatchback to the party next spring or
summer, and has even announced plans to produce the vehicle in the U.S. if it is popular. In a similar move, Mitsubishi
has brought up selling a U.S. manufactured Colt in North America.
