Ford to cut 1,100 CAW jobs

Two days ago, we heard that Ford wanted a reduction in CAW jobs, and it appears that they got their way. Ford will cut 1,100 jobs in Canada – nearly 10% of their union workforce – over the next three years, with the majority of those coming from their Windsor engine and casting operations. Ford’s minivan and full-size car plants, rumored for closure, will stay open for the duration of the three-year contract. The union won a very modest increase in pay, with an average raise of just over 1% per year, and there are some increased payouts for early retirement as well. This would seem to be strong evidence that at least the CAW understands what the domestic automakers are up against, but there’s still talks with DCX and GM coming up and it will be interesting to see what sort of job cuts the union is willing to accept from those two companies.
