In a very hard world in which “prioritizing” means laying off some and keeping others, Ford has decided that new
product planners fall into the “keeper” category. These areas have already been decreased by 20 percent in recent
years, and Ford executives assert that they’re happy with that level. Ford executives also promise that cost-cutting
won’t affect the new product programs (in whose baskets lay the eggs of Ford’s turnaround plan), making it particularly
unlikely that those involved in the planning and engineering of new products will be given walking papers.
Ford is expected to offer more restructuring details when it announces its third quarter financial results on October
20.
