Detroit Auto Show: 2006 Hyundai Sonata

Let’s talk interior. We’ve seen the Hyundai’s lines before from when it debuted overseas, so I wanted to focus in on
where Hyundai needs to be strong, the inside.  The Sonata grows inside to 120 cubic feet of total interior volume,
which categorizes it as a full-size car, bigger than the Camry and Accord. Those numbers can be very deceiving because
total volume is calculated with the seats removed. Hyundai does not give legroom totals, so I can’t truly compare
it.

As with other cars, the seating position has been raised an inch for a higher seating position and easier
ingress/egress. Tilt steering is standard on all models and a telescoping function added to the upscale LX. All models
have the AM/FM/CD/MP3 player and the GLS and LX have duplicate controls on the steering wheel, which looks to be
necessary due to the stereo mounted a bit high on the dash. Is it me, or does that really look hard to reach? To keep
your rear warm, heated leather seats are standard on the LX.

The mix of colors on the dash give it a more upscale look, but the shiny, fake dark wood leaves me cold. I?m also
not a fan of the vents placed between the radio and HVAC controls. They stop the flow of the center stack. Now I have
not gotten a chance to sit in a new Sonata, so I cannot comment on the tactile feel of the materials used. Use this as
a quick look into the cockpit of a ?Sonata like you have never seen before?.
