Overview
The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla compact hot hatch is based on the standard Corolla Hatchback platform and has been extensively reworked by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing performance division. The result is a sports hatchback with a unique floorpan, more than 300 additional structural welds, and redesigned front and rear suspension. A turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine drives all four wheels through a standard AWD system, paired with either a 6-speed intelligent manual transmission or a new-for-2025 8-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT). The GR Corolla is offered in three trim levels: Core, Premium, and the new Premium Plus.
What’s New for 2025
The most significant addition for the 2025 GR Corolla is the 8-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission, now offered across all three trim grades alongside the 6-speed manual. Torque increases from 273 to 295 lb-ft, and launch control is adopted to optimize standing-start acceleration. Suspension tuning is revised to reduce rear squat under acceleration and improve cornering stability, with the rear trailing arm mounting point raised to sharpen drive force response when the throttle is pressed.
A redesigned front bumper incorporates additional cooling components, such as an automatic transmission cooler, and has a revised aerodynamic geometry. The new Premium Plus trim joins the lineup, effectively replacing the limited-production Circuit Edition, bringing a forged carbon-fiber roof, Brin Naub synthetic leather sports seats with red stitching, matte-black 18-inch wheels, a hood bulge with gloss-black air vents, and a color-coded roof-mounted shark-fin antenna as standard equipment.
Exterior
The GR Corolla’s body is distinguished from the standard hatchback by wide front and rear fender flares, a gloss-black front grille with functional air ducts on the Premium and Premium Plus, and a matte-black front grille treatment on the Core grade. Triple exhaust outlets with brushed stainless steel tips and LED taillights and red-painted brake calipers with the GR logo are standard across the lineup. Core and Premium grades wear 18-inch gloss-black cast-alloy wheels, while Premium Plus switches to matte-black finishing for the same wheels. The Premium Plus is the only grade to receive a forged carbon-fiber roof as standard, along with a sub-radiator that enhances engine cooling capacity.

Interior
The Core grades use fabric sport seats with gray stitching and GR-badged headrests, while Premium grades step up to Brin Naub synthetic leather sport seats with gray stitching, and the Premium Plus replaces those with the same material in red stitching. Every trim receives a GR leather-trimmed tilt and telescoping sport steering wheel with integrated Multi-Information Display and Bluetooth controls, aluminum sport pedals, and a leather-trimmed shift knob.Â
The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster displays AWD mode, turbo pressure, gear shift indicators, and real-time fuel economy data, and the infotainment touchscreen measures eight inches. Infotainment/audio systems are split by grade, as the Core gets a Toyota Audio Multimedia system with six speakers and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Premium and above receive a JBL unit with eight speakers and an amplifier. Heated front seats and a wireless charger are standard on the Premium grade and above.

Pros and Cons
Pros
- Front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials standard on all trims
- Rev-matching six-speed manual is class-leading in feel and precision
- New 8-speed DAT adds accessibility without sacrificing 0–60 performance
Cons
- Interior cabin noise is elevated at highway speeds
- 17.8 cu. ft. cargo hold is smaller than most hatchback rivals
- Premium fuel required adds to running costs
Verdict
The 2025 GR Corolla’s new 8-speed DAT broadens the car’s audience without diluting the manual’s appeal, and the manual’s 24 mpg combined is a decent figure for a 300-hp AWD performance hatch. The interior lags behind rivals like the Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R in material quality and noise isolation, and the 17.8-cu-ft cargo hold and obstructive bracing with the rear seats folded are constraints. But against the Subaru WRX and Hyundai Elantra N, the GR Corolla holds a clear advantage in drivetrain sophistication and chassis adjustability.
