Overview
The 2025 Toyota bZ4X is a compact all-electric SUV twinned with the jointly developed Subaru Solterra, and it was Toyota’s first battery-electric vehicle when it launched in 2022. The bZ4X seats up to five people, comes with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and has an EPA-estimated range of up to 252 miles. The single-motor FWD produces 201 hp, and the dual-motor AWD puts out 214 hp. It’s the kind of car that would suit families looking for some compact SUV versatility, Toyota loyalists favoring electric mobility, and commuters looking for green efficiency on the daily grind.

What’s New for 2025?
The Toyota bZ4X’s price is dramatically reduced for MY2025, with the base XLE FWD trim seeing a price reduction of $6,000 and the Limited a reduction of $5,380. A new blacked-out Nightshade Edition trim joins the range, complete with black exterior accents, black 20-inch wheels, red interior stitching, a heated steering wheel and front seats, and a black roof, offset by a choice of either Heavy Metal or Wind Chill Pearl paintwork.
All trims gain a dual-voltage charging cable with a CCS connector that enables Level 3 DC fast charging, and one year of complimentary EVgo charging is now included. The Limited trim’s standard driver assists are expanded with the addition of lane-change assist, traffic-jam assist, and front cross-traffic alert.
Exterior
The bZ4X has an angular, bold design, with proportions successfully balancing a compact footprint with good interior space. Its size is typical for a compact – 184.6 inches long and 73 inches wide – and about the same as a Hyundai Ioniq 5, or four inches shorter than a Tesla Model Y. The closed grille panel is flanked by sharp LED headlights, and black body cladding adds some rugged SUV character.
In profile, the sloping roofline falls away gently toward the rear, and you can see the standard 18-inch wheels on the XLE, which grow in size to 20 inches on the Limited and Nightshade Edition. The LED taillights are connected by a light bar and wrap around the body in dramatic slashes. The Nightshade Edition’s exterior trim, door handles, badging, and rear spoiler are all blacked out. Available two-tone paint jobs enhance the bZ4X’s modern aesthetic.

Interior
The cabin is roomy, with a rear seat that will accommodate taller passengers, and 27.7 cu-ft of cargo space behind the second row, expanding to up to 56.9 cu-ft with it folded down. All trims come with a power liftgate, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and SofTex leatherette upholstery, while the Nightshade gets a SofTex/cloth combo with red stitching, and the Limited is treated to ventilated front seats and ambient lighting.
The dashboard contains a seven-inch digital gauge cluster in front of the driver and a landscape 12.3-inch touchscreen to their right, incorporating connected navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, a wireless device charger, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Huge $6,000 price reduction for 2025
- EPA range of up to 252 miles
- Spacious interior with 27.7 cu-ft trunk
- Two years of complimentary maintenance included
Cons:
- Limited 160-mile highway range in testing
- Slower DC fast charging than rivals
- No one-pedal driving mode available
- Range trails competitors significantly
Verdict
The 2025 bZ4X does not lead the class in power output, performance, efficiency, or range, but its dramatic price reduction does make it a lot more attractive this year. At just $37K, the XLE now undercuts its rivals, and the EPA range of 252 miles feels adequate at that price. It doesn’t get there in practice, though, so the bZ4X remains wholly unremarkable on this score, in a class that generally produces superior figures.
Interior space is good, and there are more standard driver assists this year, but luggage space still trails the class. The $44K Nightshade trim arguably makes the most sense with its menacing blacked-out appearance, 20-inch wheels, and more powerful AWD powertrain.
