Toyota Corolla’s value is undeniable
There’s no denying that the Toyota Corolla is one of the world’s favorite cars, and for good reason. Not only is it one of the most affordable vehicles in the industry, but the Corolla has proven itself to be a reliable daily driver, boasting high fuel economy with few frills to write home about. The SE and XSE models add a few sporty touches to the otherwise no-nonsense sedan. There’s a $3,275 difference between the two, but is the XSE worth the higher price tag? Let’s dive in and find out.

For the 2026 model year, the Corolla features new digital gauge displays, measuring seven inches in the lower trim levels and 12.3 inches in the XSE. Toyota has also added blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert to the list of standard equipment, making the compact sedan safer than it already was.
Corolla SE vs XSE pricing
Starting at $25,165, the Corolla SE is a step above the entry-level LE model, which starts at $22,725. The Corolla XSE sits atop the gas-powered trim range, priced from $28,440. There are also three hybrid models to choose from. The Hybrid LE starts at $24,575, and the Hybrid SE serves as the middle point, available from $27,015. The Hybrid XLE tops the range, priced from $28,940. Toyota doesn’t offer a hybrid version of the XSE.

No matter what way you cut it, the Toyota Corolla LE is a superb and practical compact sedan designed to get drivers from A to B with no hassle. The SE and XSE build on that practicality with a sportier flair, and there are several premium amenities that are readily apparent in the XSE model.
Corolla XSE offers upscale amenities
Despite the $3,275 price difference, both Corolla models feature a similar sporty aesthetic. LED lighting, graphite-colored 18-inch wheels, and a gloss-black sport mesh grille come standard. In fact, there are only a few significant differences in exterior styling. While the SE features a color-keyed rear spoiler, the XSE gets a spoiler in gray metallic finish. The top-spec XSE model also gets a power moonroof, complete with a sliding sunshade.

Inside, the SE and XSE trims grow apart. The latter model gets power-adjustable, heated front seats trimmed in SofTex upholstery. A wireless charging pad and 12.3-inch digital gauge display are optional equipment in the SE and come standard in the XSE. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility make the list of standard equipment across the Corolla range, though.
If you prefer a larger touchscreen display, then the XSE is the better bet. It comes stocked with a 10.5-inch display, topping the SE model’s eight-inch unit. A nine-speaker JBL premium audio system is also an optional upgrade in the XSE. Otherwise, both the SE and XSE feature a six-speaker audio system.

Both models get a pretty sweet list of standard interior equipment, including a leather-trimmed steering wheel with paddle shifters, metallic interior trim with chrome handles, and front and rear power windows with one-touch functionality. There are also a total of four USB-C ports split between the front and rear seats.
Corolla SE offers higher fuel economy but the same performance
The 2026 Toyota Corolla SE and XSE feature the same powertrain: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT that sends 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. They also come stocked with a stiffer MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension that, combined with a low center of gravity, creates a more engaging driving experience. Note, however, that the SE and XSE aren’t built to offer thrills. For that kind of experience, you’ll want the Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch.

Toyota
While the two models may be equal in performance, there’s a slight difference when it comes to fuel economy. The Corolla SE is rated for 31 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway, while the XSE offers 38 mpg on the highway. The difference in curb weight is pretty minor at just 40 lbs.
Final thoughts

Toyota
The Toyota Corolla has never been a model to stand out from the crowd. Rather, it blends in with subdued styling, performance that’s sufficient but not over the top, and excellent fuel economy. The SE and XSE models build on the base LE model’s practicality, with improved amenities, materials, and tech. The SE model adds a more athletic stance, while the XSE comes equipped with more premium amenities, including wireless smartphone charging. Personally, I’d opt for the more value-driven SE, which comes equipped with 18-inch wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen display, and LED lighting, but either way, both Corollas will serve as tremendous commuters for years to come.
