Update: The original story said the 2016 Rogue switches to a camera-based blind spot warning system, rather than radar-based. The opposite is true, and the text is changed to reflect this.

Nissan is announcing most its 2016 model-year changes, and you can say farewell to the Xterra after 15 years in the lineup. As previously rumored, the SUV is shuffling off without a replacement to join the similar recent fates of the Nissan Pathfinder hybrid and Volkswagen Touareg hybrid. The decision is easy to understand. The Japanese automaker's volume is up 4.6 percent through July in the US to 792,642 vehicles, but the Xterra moved just 8,114 examples in that time, down 25.1 percent from the same period in 2014.

While the Xterra is leaving, Nissan has a lot in store for the 2016 model year. New additions to the lineup include the latest generations of the Maxima and Titan. Plus, the Altima and Sentra are being refreshed with reports suggesting both of them take design inspiration from the latest Murano.

Nissan is also keeping the Rogue fresh, even though it was just redesigned for 2014. The SL Premium package gets forward emergency braking. Siri Eyes Free is added to the SV Premium package and SL, and body-colored mirrors with integrated turn signals come on the S appearance package. Finally, the blind spot warning system is now radar-based, rather than using a camera.

You can read the full list of changes for each model in the press release below, but some of the highlights include:
  • 370Z Coupe and 370Z Nismo are available with a Bose stereo with active noise cancellation and active sound enhancement.
  • The Frontier gets a moonroof on the Crew Cab SV
  • GT-R wears 20-spoke Rays wheels rather than the previous 10-spoke design
  • Juke has standard Siri Eyes Free
  • NV Cargo has added side-impact airbags
  • NV Passenger gets a standard 5.8-inch infotainments system on the SL trim
  • Pathfinder has an optional cold package on the SV with heated front seats, steering wheel, and side mirrors
  • Versa Note SV now gets convenience package standard, which includes a 5.0-inch infotainment system, RearView Monitor, and Divide-N-Hide rear floor.

The 2016 Nissan lineup: Charting the changes

Nissan is a brand on the move. And on a roll. The past two years have seen the back-to-back introductions of the segment-busting 2014 Rogue and 2015 Murano, which helped drive Nissan to record 2014 calendar year sales of 1,269,565 (+12.2%) in the United States.

Among the models setting all-time annual sales records were Altima, JUKE, LEAF, NV, Rogue and Versa. The Nissan LEAF sold more than 30,000 units in the U.S. – the first time any plug-in vehicle has reached that milestone in a single year.

Nissan also achieved the highest fuel economy rating of any full-line manufacturer in the United States, according to the 2014 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "Trends" Report. Nissan's fleet-wide fuel economy rating of 26.2 combined mpg was highest among all full-line automakers in the annual report, which is the authoritative reference on new light-duty vehicle carbon dioxide emissions, fuel economy and powertrain technology trends in the United States.

This year has also been a significant one for NISMO, Nissan's motorsports group, both on and off the track. The current portfolio of production NISMO vehicles includes two JUKE models, 370Z and the 600-horsepower GT-R NISMO. On the track, the revolutionary Nissan GT-R LM NISMO made its competition debut at the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours, while NISMO-powered LM P2 race cars took the top six finishing positions in the class.

New for 2016

Leading the way for 2016 are two more all-new models – the eighth-generation Nissan Maxima "4-Door Sports Car" and the category redefining, Cummins diesel-powered Nissan TITAN XD pickup. The stunning new Maxima arrived at Nissan dealerships nationwide in June and will be followed by TITAN XD later in the year.

But that's not all. Two of the company's top-selling models, Altima and Sentra, also will see significant refreshing in the 2016 model year. Details on both vehicles will be announced shortly.

The new model year also sees the continued advancement of Nissan safety and connectivity system technology across the widest-ever application of vehicles and trim levels – including NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps, NissanConnect Services telematics, Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), Driver Attention Alert (DAA) and Around View® Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD), just to name a few.

Nissan's Forward Emergency Braking (FEB), which uses radar technology to monitor speed and proximity to the vehicle ahead, is now available on the 2016 Rogue. It joins Murano and Maxima as vehicles offering this advanced technology usually found on more expensive luxury vehicles. Nissan will add the technology to more products before the year is finished.

The new year also sees the introduction of Siri™ Eyes Free to the Nissan lineup, beginning with the 2016 JUKE and Rogue. The system allows drivers to utilize the Siri™ function on equipped iPhones® through a voice command button on the steering wheel without having to take their eyes off the road.

Here is an overview of the major enhancements to Nissan cars, SUVs and trucks for the 2016 model year, followed by a top-line overview of the 2016 changes and more complete "Fast Facts" product information:

Versa Note SV adds content of the previous SV Convenience Package as standard equipment, including: NissanConnect with Mobile Apps, 5.0-inch color display, Streaming audio via Bluetooth®, Hands-free Text Messaging Assistant and SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), RearView Monitor and Divide-N-Hide® Adjustable Floor

Rogue adds Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) to Rogue SL Premium Package; Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) added to Rogue SV and SL Premium Packages; NissanConnect Services telematics added to Rogue SL; Siri™ Eyes Free added to Rogue SV Premium Package and Rogue SL

NV Cargo adds 1st row side- and roof-mounted curtain supplemental side-impact air bags with rollover sensor for front outboard occupant head protection as standard equipment

And Xterra, one of the boldly designed vehicles that helped reinvigorate the Nissan brand at the beginning of the century, will go out of production after a highly successful 15-year run

2016 Nissan TITAN XD Crew Cab

Nissan challenges the full-size pickup segment in North America with the introduction of a "powerful precision tool" for hard-working, hard-playing buyers – the all-new 2016 Nissan TITAN XD. More than just a new model, TITAN XD creates a "new class" of pickup that stakes out a unique position in the segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries. The bold new design combines the capability of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup – and is anchored by a powerful Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel rated at 310 horsepower and a hefty 555 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a heavy-duty 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

While the new TITAN XD offers the effortless towing and hauling of the larger, more expensive heavy-duty trucks – including a maximum towing capacity of more than 12,000 pounds* when properly equipped – it offers the fuel-efficiency* and affordability of a half-ton pickup.

TITAN's innovation leadership continues with cutting-edge available towing, utility features and driving aids, including an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights. Also assisting trailer hook-ups is TITAN's RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides, while the available Around View® Monitor (AVM) provides a unique "bird's eye" view of the surrounding area from front, rear and side cameras to help with parking and pulling in and out of tight spaces. The system also includes Moving Object Detection (MOD), which helps the driver detect moving objects such as vehicles, shopping carts or other large objects when backing out via an on-screen notification and warning chime.

Helping TITAN XD owners take advantage of its ample towing power are two available hitches – including an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame and easily accessible in the bed.

The new TITAN XD Crew Cab, with its powerful Cummins 5.0L Turbo Diesel V8, is the first of three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offerings and five grade levels to be available later in the Nissan TITAN lineup. More information on the full lineup will be available at a later date.

Offered in S, SV, PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve models
TITAN XD available in late 2015
Gasoline-powered TITAN models coming in spring 2016
