The average resale value of General Motors vehicles climbed to 44 percent last year, matching that of Chrysler and sitting one percent less than Ford, but still 7.5 percent less than Honda. It's a welcome increase from the post-bankruptcy days of 2009 when 36.5 percent was number upon which lease rates were based. According to Bloomberg, even though that puts GM in line with the overall market rate of 46.5 percent, the company figures it can save from $150 million to $200 million if it can increase its vehicles' end-of-lease value because it won't have to put so much cash on the table to entice lessees.

It won't be a quick fix, GM's North American CFO saying "The key will be great products and pricing and incentive discipline," as well as limiting how many vehicles get sold into rental fleets. It also wants the hot-off-the-line 2014 Chevrolet Impala to be part of the charge, planning to invert its sales chart so that 70 percent of deliveries go to retail customers instead of 30 percent.
GM says boosted resale values could save $200M originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 10:57:00 EST.

On paper, the Chevrolet Impala is a pretty strong seller, posting annual sales that have hovered right around 170,000 units for the last two years, but it only takes one trip to practically any rental car agency to discover where the majority of those sales have come from. In fact, General Motors told Autoblog that a full 70 percent of Impala sales last year went to fleet companies for things like rental cars and government vehicles. Logic tells us that this is neither good for resale values nor name equity, so Chevrolet is getting ready to roll out an all-new Impala with improved comfort, styling and technology, hoping to turn the tables on its retail-to-fleet ratio.

Chevrolet's sedans have come on quite strong in the last few months with the introduction of the Cruze diesel and the SS sedan, but while these will likely be low-volume sellers, there's more pressure for the new Impala to perform well as GM looks to slash fleet sales and compete with the wide variety of full-size sub-luxury sedans. Riding on a platform shared with the Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS, the 2014 Impala will compete against the Hyundai Azera, Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon on the more traditional side, while also looking to take a bite out of somewhat sportier models like the Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger twins and the Nissan Maxima. We headed to sunny San Diego to see if this totally new Impala can stand on its own without the assistance of fleet companies and rental agencies.
Continue reading 2014 Chevrolet Impala [w/video]

2014 Chevrolet Impala [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 11:57:00 EST.
Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" tagline has finally been run into the ground, replaced with the Bowtie brand's "Find New Roads" slogan that's part of parent General Motors' plan to unify its everyday brand's marketing efforts worldwide. The new Chevrolet campaign was ushered in on prime time last night during the Grammy Awards on CBS, and the first spot, a 90-second full-line ad, also marks the first appearance of the 2014 Corvette Stingray in a commercial.

Being a full-line ad, the commercial is composed of vignettes centered on different vehicles in the brand's lineup. The all-new 2014 Impala also makes its first commercial appearance in dapper fashion, and time is spent on a skateboarding Sonic and a bouquet of brightly colored Spark hatchbacks driven by fashionable women. The ad starts and ends with Chevy's green halo car, the Volt, along with a young girl with her robotic dog (yes, really).

Chevrolet's "Runs Deep" campaign got off to a rocky start in the fall of 2010, but it did last for a couple of years with some tweaks. This new one, "Find New Roads" seems more intent on drawing new customers into the fold than the outgoing tagline, which seemed to play more toward the brand faithful. It admittedly reminds us more than a little the short-lived "Find Your Own Road" Saab motto (which, we note, was conceived while the Swedish brand was under GM's control), but no matter, we still think it's got more long-term potential than "Runs Deep."

The Chevrolet Malibu is failing to sell at the pace General Motors would like, prompting the automaker to make the decision to refresh the midsize sedan just one year after a complete redesign. According to a report from Newsday, the main gripes from consumers center around the car's tepid styling and lack of room in the rear seat.

Naturally, styling is subjective, but the report indicates GM plans to bring the Malibu's styling more inline with its larger Impala sedan, making changes mostly to the front fascia. As far as rear-seat room goes, it's worth noting that the 2013 Malibu actually has less legroom than the old 2012 model; 36.9 inches versus 37.6. Shoulder and hip room, though, increased by two and three inches, respectively, with the redesign.

In any case, without major structural changes, there's no way the Malibu will reach the rear legroom levels set by such large so-called midsize sedans like the Honda Accord (38.5 inches) or Volkswagen Passat (39.1) due to the fact that it's sized to be a global car and not one specifically for the US market. And, considering the impending existence of the 2014 Impala, we don't expect any major structural changes to affect the Malibu's interior offerings.

It's somewhat unusual for an automaker to make such significant changes to a car after only one year of production. But with all of the hype surrounding the emergency refresh of the 2013 Honda Civic, this sort of thing could become more common moving forward.
Chevy Malibu emergency refresh to include roomier rear seats, Impala styling tweaks originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Jan 2013 08:43:00 EST.
We've had no lack of information regarding the new 2014 Chevrolet Impala so far; we know that it will sticker for about $27k to start, that it will offer I4, V6 and hybrid powerplants and that it will go on sale in Spring 2013. We also now know that the Impala will have some very closely related competition, at least for a little while...

Buried at the very end of a press release about the manufacturing of the Chevrolet Camaro returning to US soil yesterday, was this nugget about the current-generation of the Impala: "The consolidated line at Oshawa Assembly will continue to produce the current generation Chevrolet Impala and Equinox until June 2014."

That's right, long after the better looking and fully modern 2014 Impala is on sale in dealerships, the old girl will still be getting churned out up in Canada - most likely being sold as a fleet-only special for the remaining run. If you'll recall, this situation wouldn't be unique for Chevy - the sixth-generation Malibu stayed in the marketplace badged as a "Malibu Classic" for some time after the seventh-gen car went on sale. The dual-Impala strategy should help preserve residual values of the all-new 2014 model, while at the same time allowing GM to further profit from the old Impala, whose tooling has long since been paid for.
Faustino Ibarra is facing charges related to stealing Tim Allen's 1996 Chevrolet Impala last week. Ibarra took the modified sedan from Allen's garage in Los Angeles and drove it more than 1,000 miles to Denver, where family members turned him in to local authorities. But the story took a turn for the strange once a local reporter sat down with the thief for an interview. While speaking to a local news outlet from behind bars, the 32-year-old Ibarra said Allen actually gave him permission to take the car because the celebrity had adopted him as his son some years back.

"I emailed my dad the morning I got the car in and everything is fine and I've got the car and it's ready for you and we need to talk about me coming to live with you," Ibarra said. He is currently being held without bond. He will be extradited to California to face charges ranging from grand theft auto to stalking.

Allen had the Impala built with a 32-valve Corvette ZR1 engine with 446 horsepower and a custom interior to serve as his ride of choice to black tie events in the '90s. You can view the interview for yourself below.
Continue reading Tim Allen's beloved Impala stolen by man claiming to be his son [w/video]

Tim Allen's beloved Impala stolen by man claiming to be his son [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Get ready for Siri in your car. Early in 2013, Chevrolet will be the first automaker to roll out Apple's Eyes Free technology, showing up initially in the Spark (in 1LT and 2LT trims) and Sonic (in LTZ and RS versions). Both models also come with six months of OnStar service included for free, which also includes a smartphone app - available for Android, iOS or Blackberry.

Here's what Siri in your Chevy Spark or Sonic can do:

Make voice-activated, hands-free calls to Contacts on your iPhone

Play songs in the iTunes library, and even switch music sources automatically from AM/FM/XM radio to iPod mode

Listen to, compose and send an iMessage or text message to a phone number or anyone in saved Contacts

 Access Calendar and add appointments

Minimize distraction by keeping the screen of the iPhone from lighting up, even when Siri answers simple questions, such as game scores or the dates of national holidays

While in Eyes Free mode, Siri will not provide answers to complex questions that require displaying a web page.

Owners will need a compatible iPhone (4S or 5, running iOS6) to use Siri Eyes Free, connected through Bluetooth to Chevy's MyLink infotainment system.

Speaking of which, Chevrolet has also announced that the next generation of its MyLink technology (see the image to the right) will debut with the 2014 Impala. Later in the year it will also show up in GM's new full-size trucks and SUVs and the Corvette.

There are all kinds of new features in the next-gen MyLink, but one headliner is Chevy's first use of natural voice recognition. There will also be four optional graphic treatments to choose from, large icons on the touch screen plus a set of old-fashioned knobs and steering wheel controls.

Something to be thankful for this holiday weekend? A price for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala, which will sticker from $27,535 (*inclusive of an $810 destination charge). The latest headline-grabber on the Epsilon II platform, the coming Impala - which will go on sale in Spring 2013 - can be had with either a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 195 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque or a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp and 264 lb-ft. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 182 hp and eAssist light hybrid technology will come soon thereafter, with all powerplants yoked to a six-speed automatic.

The $27,535 base price gets the 2.5-liter in LS trim. It will take another $2,250 to get up to an LT, and then another $4,770 for the top-flight LTZ that runs $34,555. You'll have to wait for that LS model, though, because the 3.6-liter will be the first one to market. Not available in LS trim, the 3.6-liter will command $30,760 in LT spec and $36,580 in LTZ trim.

The conclusion of the most simplistic comparison with the $26,685 2013 Impala is that the sedan's base price has gone up by $850. However, the 2014 Impala is completely new and the base version gets a smaller, less-powerful engine. It's possible that performance figures could be similar even with the price-leader model if tuning and weight are improved, but we'll have to see, as Chevrolet hasn't released any figures yet.

For the moment, a better comparison could be the 3.0-liter LT trims, the 2014 model representing a $2,550 increase over the long-serving outgoing car, albeit with more available features like MyLink with natural voice recognition, ten airbags, adaptive cruise control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert.

There's a bit more info in the press release below about the Oshawa, Ontario and Hamtramck, Michigan-built model range, but not prices for the 2.4-liter eAssist - those will be announced later.
Continue reading 2014 Chevrolet Impala priced from $27,535*

2014 Chevrolet Impala priced from $27,535* originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 24 Nov 2012 10:01:00 EST.
Small cars are going to be well represented at the 2012 SEMA Show from numerous automakers, but Chevrolet just released eight Vegas-bound concepts that we'll be able to see next week. While the Cruze, Sonic and Spark have all helped bolster Chevy's small-car cred, the Malibu has helped the automaker compete in the family-friendly midsize class, and now the Bowtie brand is looking to show some of the customization potential for all of these popular cars.

Perhaps one of the most eye-catching concepts that Chevy has teased so far, the Malibu Turbo Performance Concept might focus more on styling than power, but it still shows how cool the new Malibu can look. Some of the concept's features include a sporty-looking body kit, clear-lensed LED taillights, rear spoiler and a stunning set of 20-inch wheels. Although it keeps the same 259-horsepower turbo engine under the hood, it does add a few bits that could help the car's performance with upgraded suspension and brakes and a cold-air intake system.

Taking this Malibu Concept's aggressive styling and scaling it down quite a bit, the Spark Sinister concept also shows how far the car's design can be taken. Once you get past the car's color scheme and excessive use of Chevy bowties, the Spark Sinister still has a nasty look to it with its sporty front fascia, 18-inch wheels, funky side sill add-ons and a massive rear wing. Chevy will also have a couple other Sparks on display such as "The Color Run" Spark which is the official pace car of The Color Run (a unique 5K where participants get covered in various colors after each kilometer) and the "Pink Out" Spark Cancer Awareness Concept bringing more attention to the fight against breast cancer.

Chevy will also have the Cruze Upscale at SEMA which will focus on an interior decked-out in leather but will also have some performance enhancements such as the adjustable coil-over suspension and upgraded brakes. Even the Sonic will get into the SEMA frenzy with a few different Z-Spec concepts to show just how far this small car can be tricked out.

Not to be left out, Chevy will also be unveiling concept versions of the rest of its car lineup including the Camaro, Corvette and the new 2014 Impala. The Impala concept is simply a flashier version of the production car that goes on sale early next year with a red paint job, 20-inch wheels and black ice chrome accents on the inside; Chevy is keeping the Camaro and Corvette SEMA concepts a secret until the show.
Continue reading Chevy cars highlight GM's fleet of custom SEMA concepts

Chevy cars highlight GM's fleet of custom SEMA concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 10:45:00 EST.
Automotive News reports General Motors and the Canadian Auto Workers have reached a tentative labor agreement that will see the automaker invest $692.8 million into Canadian facilities over the life of the four year-deal. The two groups closed a 30-hour negotiating session that touched on everything from wages and benefits, to plant closings and new model manufacturing. The agreement covers around 8,200 workers currently, and GM has agreed to add or maintain 1,750 positions over the next four years. That means the automaker will postpone the consolidation of the company's Oshawa plant, where the current Chevrolet Impala is assembled. The manufacturer had planned to completely shutter the line, impacting around 2,000 workers.

GM will continue with plans to assemble the next-generation Impala at its Hamtramck facility, but will now also build the 2014 model on one shift in Oshawa. The move will employ around 750 Canadian workers, though that number may grow if the production is moved to two shifts later in 2014.

Even so, the CAW isn't entirely happy with the proposed settlement. The union was not able to secure the production of another vehicle. Union leaders say that's largely due to the fact that GM is in market share decline in Canada.

As you may recall, the CAW recently reached a similar tentative agreement with Ford.
GM, CAW reach tentative agreement originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 13:03:00 EST.
A few months ago, eBay Motors challenged four teams to a build-off contest to be aired on its BUILT web series. The top garages were all tasked with sourcing vehicles and parts only from eBay, transforming each machine into something special and then offering up the finished product for sale through an eBay auction with all proceeds from the sales going to charity.

Without question, each team approached the project differently. At one end of the spectrum is a spectacular Porsche 911 Rally racer, built in the spirit of the famed Rothmans 911. At the other end is a Chevrolet G20 van, inspired by World War II aircraft, complete with a NOS-inhaling V8.

Considering how much work went into each, the current prices are bargain-basement low. Get your bidding in now, as the charity auction only runs through Friday, Sept. 14.
Just a day after General Motors issued a recall for 1,713 Chevrolet Impala Police Sedans in Canada, it has issued the same recall for 36,413 Impala cruisers in America. The issue concerns the front lower control arms on 2008-2012 model year patrol cars, which can fracture and separate from their mounts.

GM says that no accidents of any kind have been attributed to the problem, but that it will begin sending notices to owners later this month and dealers will replace both front lower control arms. In an email, Chevrolet spokesman Alan Adler informed Autoblog that "There is no recall or any field action on non-police (civilian) Impalas now or in the works." Why is that? According to Adler, "Analysis was done to understand the durability in non-police Impalas and showed the control arms used in the base Impalas will exceed GM Engineering durability requirements."

According to the Toronto Sun, General Motors will be shutting down one of the lines at its Oshawa, Ontario plant, putting 2,000 workers out of a job. As of yet, no official notice has been given to the employees or the Canadian Auto Workers union that represents them, though an official announcement is reportedly coming within the next couple of days.

GM will be closing the line that currently builds the Chevrolet Equinox and outgoing Impala models. Recently, we reported that the automaker would be adding Equinox production to its Spring Hill, Tennessee facility, but this news of a line closure in Oshawa likely means that GM's compact crossover will now be built exclusively in the United States. The 2014 Impala will move to GM's flexible line in Oshawa, where it will be built alongside the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac XTS. The Impala will also be built at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck facility, which is currently responsible for the Chevrolet Malibu and Volt.

Another report from The Globe and Mail suggests that a third shift could be added to the flex line when production of the Impala and XTS fire up. If that's the case, employment on this line would rise from about 2,000 to 2,500 workers, and the laid-off employees from the consolidated line would have first crack at these jobs.
GM to shut Oshawa line, shed 2,000 jobs originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Jun 2012 11:01:00 EST.
While we're not ready to label this the return of the Pontiac G8, count us eager to get behind the wheel of whatever a "2014 Chevrolet SS Performance" turns out to be. Hopefully the appearance of this reference on the OnStar website is more than just a digital placeholder.

Chevy SS rumors have been swirling lately, with General Motors registering the "SS" trademark earlier this month, just days after our spy shooters caught what looked like a hotted-up Impala. Then there's the NASCAR situation: Chevrolet has said its new entry in the racing series will be both a new vehicle and a new nameplate. We're guessing that car isn't going to be the Spark.

So this new OnStar "leak," if it is such a thing, would point to the Chevy SS being a separate model (you can check it out on OnStar's site here). If we are reading our tea leaves correctly, the model will be derived from the rear-drive Holden Commodore (the same Zeta architecture that underpins Chevrolet's law-enforcement-only Caprice PPV), while the brand's front-drive Impala will get a new, sportier variant. We'd also assume that the long-wheelbase version of the Commodore used for the Caprice cop car would donate its top-level powertrain, the 355-horsepower, 6.0-liter V8.

Maybe we should just press the OnStar button and ask?
Has GM's OnStar accidentally confirmed the 2014 Chevy SS? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 11:30:00 EST.
The 1961 Impala SS inaugurated the SS trim line to the brand, and its SS cars have found more than a million homes since - examples like this 1966 model helping the way. Turns out, though, that General Motors just got around to patenting the designator SS on April 13, 2012. Since the SS descriptor has historically indicated a model variant or trim level, distinctions that apparently don't normally warrant trademark protection, the questions are why now and what for?

The evidence would seem to lead to this being a model designator, not just a trim, and there have been rumors that a civilian version of the police-only Caprice will hit the market and simply be called SS. But if that's the case, what would the hotter Impala prototype we've seen in spy shots be named, and what - if anything - would happen to the SS trim available on other Chevy models?

Click the image below for a look at the patent application, and we'll be looking forward to finding out what is going to go where.
Chevrolet trademarks SS designation... why now? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 12:59:00 EST. Episode #278 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week, Chris, Dan, and Zach are joined by David Kiley of Autoblog and AOL Autos to chat about Dodge Dart pricing, the next Ford Mustang shying away from retro styling, Chevrolet quietly developing an Impala SS, and a NHTSA proposal to mandate brake override systems. Your questions and comments power the end of the 'cast, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time.
Well... look who lives! Our spy photographers have managed to snag a few photos of what may very well be the next interpretation of the Chevrolet Impala SS. Long thought to be a casualty of the General Motors bailout, the biggest member Club SS was reportedly shelved a few years back. The Impala line hasn't offered an SS performance variant since 2009, and the more aggressive grille, front fascia and tweaked head- and taillight arrays on this prototype hint at something more sinister than any topped-out LTZ model could offer. Our spy shooter's supplier sources indicate GM is, in fact, still working on an Impala SS, and they suggest the sedan may bow with a new LF3 twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 under the hood.

If true, that means the brawny Impala could scoot down the road with a heady 380 horsepower. As far as we know, no vehicle since the limited production 350-hp Ford Focus RS500 has tried to push anywhere near that many ponies to the front wheels, which begs the question: will the Impala offer all-wheel drive despite recent reports to the contrary?

Doing so would seem to position the Impala SS quite well against the freshly updated Taurus SHO. Either way, we're excited to give this big boy a go.
Is Chevrolet testing an Impala SS? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 16:25:00 EST.
Chevrolet has over a hundred years of heritage from which it can call upon when the right marketing angle presents itself. Like, for instance, when it launches a brand-new Impala for the 2014 model year, as it has just done at the 2012 New York Auto Show. As such, the automaker has brought a mint 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS 427 Convertible to display alongside its new family sedan.

We'll get this right out of the way: the 1966 'Vert has nothing in common with the 2014 sedan, other than its nameplate.

Regardless, it's always fun to ogle over a classic muscle car, and this '66 Impala is, perhaps, the very best of its full-size breed. The 427-cubic-inch V8 was factory rated at 390 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque - plenty more than necessary to turn those 7.5-inch-wide bias-ply tires into plumes of smoke, and the four-speed manual and 3.55:1 gears mean it's properly equipped for 1960s-style stoplight showdowns.

Check out this classic Impala SS in our high-res image gallery, and before we all get too sentimental for the old times, remember two points: First, as awesome as this machine undoubtedly is, it could never be sold today due to safety and emissions reasons. Second, most of the millions of Impalas sold over the years were much more pedestrian models than this stunning blue SS.

Caveats aside, we want this car rumbling away in our virtual garage. Badly.
1966 Chevrolet Impala SS 427 Convertible reminds us of days long gone originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 17:59:00 EST.
While the 2014 Chevrolet Impala may have many charming qualities and boast a plethora of engine options, one feature it reportedly won't be offering is all-wheel drive. According to GMInsideNews.com, Chevrolet reps have said all-wheel drive is not part of the short-term or long-term plan for the new large sedan.

While the Impala will share a platform with the Cadillac XTS and Buick LaCrosse - both of which do offer AWD - apparently General Motors wants to keep the Impala front-drive-only to help differentiate it from the Buick and Cadillac. While it remains to be seen whether the lack of all-wheel drive will hurt the Impala's chances of competing with the Ford Taurus and Dodge Charger, which both offer it, Chevy's people have reportedly called all-wheel drive a "very slim piece of the full-size sedan market."
No all-wheel drive option in sight for 2014 Chevrolet Impala originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Apr 2012 15:44:00 EST.
General Motors has officially unveiled the 2014 Chevrolet Impala at this year's New York Auto Show. Riding on the same bones as the 2013 Malibu, the next-generation Impala boasts a considerably more attractive exterior with plenty of personality. Borrowing the best elements of design from the GM stable, we see more than a little Camaro and Lacrosse in the sedan's front fascia and stylized hips. Buyers can look forward to either standard 18-inch wheels or a slew of larger options, including massive 20-inch rollers. Under the hood, GM has graced the 2014 Impala with a range efficient direct-injection engines, including a 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with the automaker's eAssist hybrid system.

With 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, the drivetrain falls well short of the 288 horsepower offered up by the Ford Taurus, though it does so while returning significantly better fuel economy. GM Says the four-cylinder Impala will return 35 mpg highway, six mpg better than the full-size Ford.

Those who need a little extra grunt can step up to the company's tried-and-true 3.6-liter V6 with 303 horsepower and 234 lb-ft of torque, and there's also a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder available that produces 195 horsepower, while all three engines are mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Keep scrolling for the official press release from Chevrolet, and check our galleries of live and official images while you're at it.
Continue reading 2014 Chevrolet Impala is a full-size improvement [w/video]

2014 Chevrolet Impala is a full-size improvement [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 08:59:00 EST.
