Home-built dyno is dangerously awesome – Click above to watch video after the jump

Tuning an engine can be a delicate procedure. There is a lot of time and patience required to dial things in just right. You can spend hours and big dollars adjusting parameters on an expensive professional dynamometer –or you can be a crafty Scandinavian and homebrew a dyno right in your yard.

Apparently, all it takes is the rear end from a heavy-duty truck, some straps and a quick skaal to Odin. The result is a snowed-in dyno that can tune all the V8-engine-swapped drift machines in the neighborhood. Click past the jump to watch ingenuity at work.

      this will not measure horsepower and tis therefore useless.

        i think he is mapping the ignition and injectors. he just needs to run the engine loaded and see the temperatures in the cylinder to tune that. so it is useful at least for that. also you can calculate the mass of the truck wheels and time it to resolve the hp and torque. again it is useful as long as you know what you are doing. even a proper dyno is worthless if you don't know what to read and look for.

        the whole point of a dyno is to tune a car. a dyno is not an accurate measure of a cars horsepower, each dyno is different, its merely to see if what you have changed makes a difference. its a TUNING TOOL, you tool.

        Though I don't understand Moonspeak, from context I can deduce that what they're doing is loading the engine using the inertia of the truck axle so they can fill in the blanks on the fuel map. Yes, you can do it driving around on the road, but then you have to steer and ****...

      Its extremely crude, but the fundamentals of the dyno are sound. The car is strapped in a way that holds the car down rather than holding it back to ensure accuracy. Crazy yes, but it also makes for an somewhat entertaining video.

      Is that a Nissan 180SX on the dyno? Looks like it, but I can't tell what they crammed under the hood. Anyone figured it out?

      Looks this they are running a GM LS V8 of some kind with HP tuners for tuning software and an Innovate AFR sensor. I'm no Nissan expert but the car clears says 200SX on the side. All I know is that with the muffler, turbo and intercooler mounted right behind the driver its no something I would want to drive very far. I can't imagine the intercooler is doing much that close to the turbo with no air flow over it.
