OETTINGER tuned Scirocco one mean hot hatch

Today on Cars We Can't Have, Oettinger turns its eye toward Volkswagen's
It's not just engine tweaks. The hotted-up Scirocco is low enough to scrape roadkill from the tarmac, thanks to an adjustable suspension. Holding the increased go power from the engine room in check are larger brakes, and it wouldn't be a tuner car without a body kit. Oettinger's bodywork changes are more classy than garish, and overall the look is successful at ratcheting our desire for the Scirocco up another notch.

I'll take two of these EG Civic hatc...I mean Scirocco's please.
Seriously though, unlike many other attempts German tuning (*cough* Abt *cough* http://www.worldcarfans.com/9081003.001/abt-vw-scirocco-tuning-package-released), this unrestrained look is very nice. Makes me more envious of the Europeans, although the new GTI looks pretty sweet too, particularly in the 5-door. And I am not at all a GTI fan.

I cannot begin to stomach how disappointed I am with the whole revitalization of this reskinned GTi (i.e. Scirocco)...Oettinger's new vision with of 'desert wind' product, just falls flat with stale air for me. Sure - it looks like sex, but really same old treatment on a flawed and over-priced concept. Europe can keep it and I will keep the memories of my MkII.

Have you ever seen a GTI and a Scirocco side by side?
They are completely different. The Scirocco is quite low and wide, has another stance on the road, and even if sharing front suspension and drivetrains, saying it's a reskinned Golf (like you and other here did) is ignorant.

Sex? How about impotency. That's what this car screams to me. It's a capable car that's been crippled.
As a suspension designer, I cringe when I see a car lowered this much. It's especially bad on a car with struts, as lowering the car drops the car's roll center much faster than the center of gravity, increasing body roll and decreasing stability. To compensate, I'm sure the spring rates have skyrocketed, but this has numerous drawbacks as well.
Add to that the huge, heavy, but yet still skinny wheels that would hit the fender in real driving, and you've got a car that I'd quite honestly bet is worse than stock, handling-wise.
Sex? Hardly. I think if you saw this car in motion, you'd be laughing, not turned on.

Those wheels are so big, its possible that the control arm is still parallel with the ground. Its also possible that they have different spindles. Theres a Canadian company that made drop spindles essentially for the mk3 and 4 cars that would allow proper suspension geometry while the car was dropped substantially. That coupled with the proper camber plates at the top of the strut, and its POSSIBLE (but I agree not probable) that if you put a nice set of 17" wheels on it with normal tires, it would sit right and handle well.
I'm into the VW scene, and have been for years. Kids these days want air bags just to make the car lower. Its ridiculous. Cars are for driving. I'm not against a nice aero kit, but slamming it on the ground to the point you can't drive it is ridiculous. My mk1 scirocco is pretty low, but its still very drivable and very capable at auto-x. I have some 15" BBS's on it, and a set of 'Race' (yeah right) H&R springs and Bilsteins. Looks good, handles well. Function > form.

If you were a suspension designer then you would know that "adjustable" suspension usually come with a spring perch to change the height, and that for purposes of taking photos that they'd usually slam it down.
spacegravity4me 12:28PM (10/07/2008)
So it's rough sex then?
gus 12:36PM (10/07/2008)
As a transportation designer. I approve that ride height. Sorry engineers, we can do whatever we want in Photoshop :D If engineers start to dictate how cars look, we would have a lot more Azteks running on the road.
But seriously, those wheels are not that big and the ride height is not that low in those pictures. The rear wheels do stick out a little bit too much and would hit the fenders if driven (because it's a badly done Photoshop, not the real deal?)

For some reason I still fail to see how the scirocco is more than just a really cool Golf. If VW would have released this exact same car as the Golf VI, no one would have been the wiser. What's the point?

This is what I've said all along. Its not DIFFERENT enough from the GTI to sell well in the US. Well, it might sell well, but to people who otherwise would have bought a GTI. They won't garner new sales, just cannibalize their existing ones. If they would make it AWD, and put a nice 2.0T with a bigger turbo and about 300hp, you'd sell a boat load. As a cooler GTI? Not so much.
Robert112 12:21PM (10/07/2008)
Not really. I have never, N-E-V-E-R, considered buying a VW anything. Then they announced the Scirocco; I got all excited that VW finally made a sweet car. A little piece died inside when they decided that it would take away sales of their ricer rabbit here in the us. Other than the GTI W12 650, the golf just leaves me flaccid. Much rather have a Civic Si hatch. But they killed it in America there is a void for an awesome hatch. By not bringing the Scirocco Stateside, I will continue pass VW when looking for a vehicle.

Dear Volkswagen,
Please bring us your awesome car. We will buy it.

Like my American Muscle, but aside from being lowered a tad much and rims being a bit oversized for functionality, this is sexy.

VERY Hot Looking, but it's a golf, not a scirocco. At least that's what it should be.

The lowering job really makes this car look terrible, like a half done loaf of bread. And as mentioned above, it's likely a handling dog as well.

Nice! This, and the Volvo C30 T5, are probably the coolest hatches around.

Way too slammed... looks like something stepped on the hood and took out the suspension along with the headlights and grille. That's too low to be driven hard, obviously more about looks than function.

Not bad looking. Meanest C30 I've ever seen... oops. This is the Scirrocco...
It may be a bit too low, but it is a show car. it is supposed to look dramatic more than anything. A real performance car would be tuned accordingly.
I like the black roof, although, I would have probably painted the whole rear hatch black, all the way down to the tail lights and the break line.
But the graphics treatment works for the design of the car. I've seen worse body modifications.
