Only a fraction of car seats prevent whiplash

In a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety only eight out of 97 tested car seats adequately prevent whiplash. The study ranked GM towards the bottom but also says GM brand Saab did earn the highest rating for the 9-2X and 9-3. Also reaching the best rating with no surprise were the Volvo S40, S60 and S80 along with the Jaguar S-Type. 16 other vehicles including the Chevy Malibu and Subaru Outback received the rank of acceptable, and 19 more including the Ford Focus and Mini Cooper came in as marginal. But the 30 that received the worst rating of poor included popular offerings including the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Dodge Neon and Jaguar X-Type. Don’t ask how Jaguar did well with the older S-Type model but bungled the X-Type. The study is important because whiplash victims account for $7 billion in insurance claims each year. You can see why the institute wants to do serious research on the subject. $7 billion!
