We wanted to bring some attention to a recent victory by a Cobalt SS Supercharged tuned by GM Performance Division
in the Toyo Tires Time Attack competition presented by Super Street and Eurotuner magazine. The race-prepped Cobalt SS
Supercharged used nitrous to develop 380 hp and 387 lb-ft. of torque. That prodigious amount of power was handled by
none other John Heinricy, current SCCA driving champion and director of GM Performance Division, who drove the car to
the second-fastest Time Attack run ever at 1:51.318 and first place in the Front Engine Front Drive (FF) Unlimited
Class. The Cobalt SS Supercharged beat out an impressive list of tuner vehicles (see complete ranking of vehicles
here). The second and third place
finishers were a 2004 Mitsubishi EVO VIII and a 2000 Nissan Skyline GTR, respectively.
One interesting note that wasn’t widely reported about the winning car is that Lotus was tapped for collaboration and
engineering support for the Cobalt’s powertrain (you thought we were going to say “suspension”, didn’t ya?). Without
the nitrous the 2.0L Eaton-supercharged Ecotec still developed a hearty 283 hp and 243 lb-ft. of torque.
