For more than a year, there have been
hints, rumors, and
spy shots that promise the return of the BMW 8-Series coupe. Until now, there’s been nothing official from Munich, but today the automaker released a teaser of the new 8-Series concept ahead of its debut later this month at
Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Even better, BMW says the car is slated for a 2018 release, even
earlier than expected.

The thin outline doesn’t show much beyond a long, highly stylized coupe. Compared to the cars in our spy shots, this concept is far more aggressive and stylized. The car has similar LED headlights and taillights to other current BMWs. The wide hips are a slight callback to the old 8-Series, but really they make the car look a bit like
the Bentley Continental GT.

It’s unclear if the new 8-Series will be a replacement for the currently
deceased 6-Series coupe. The new model will be based on the 7-Series, making it larger than the outgoing car. It’s set to compete directly with the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe. The car should pack both a wide variety of powertrains, from a turbocharged inline-six up to a twin-turbo V12. You should also expect some form of electrification.

There isn’t much to say beyond that. We won’t get a full view until Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on May 26, and full details likely won’t come out until the production version debuts either late this year or early in 2018.
