The 2026 Toyota TR010 has WEC podiums aimed down in its sights
Built with the specific purpose of dominating the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, the Toyota TR010 is the latest in a long line of extremely capable, state-of-the-art racing cars to leave the factory gates of the world’s largest automaker. Equipped with a 671-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 hybrid powertrain, four-wheel drive, redesigned aerodynamics, and an all-new red and white livery inspired by the ever-iconic 1998 Toyota GT-One (TS020), the 2026 TR010 has its sights aimed directly at the Ferrari 499P and the first-ever Genesis racing car, the GMR-001, which it will compete against throughout the season and, perhaps most critically, at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

When I first saw photos of Toyota’s TR010 Hybrid, I had just returned from a trip to Marseille, where I was fortunate to see the gorgeous Genesis GMR-001, which looked even more spectacular in person than in photos. With its signature Genesis twin headlights and its fiery orange paint scheme, the GMR-001 glowed as the world’s automotive press hovered around it. On the same night I saw the GMR-001, Genesis unveiled the Magma GT to the world, incorporating many of the distinctive design cues from the GMR-001 into a road-going sports car destined for production. After seeing detailed images of the new TR010 and noting its GR-Corolla-esque headlight design, I immediately thought: “What if Toyota built a road-going version of its TR010 Hybrid?”

What could a road-going TR010 look like?
Using Gemini 3 Pro, Midjourney 7.0, and Adobe Photoshop, I created these renders to envision a street-legal “homologation special” variant of the Toyota TR010 Hybrid. Although I had considered using the TR010’s styling elements to develop a potential MR2 revival, I still believe Toyota’s FT-SE concept makes the perfect blueprint for such a project. So, I ultimately decided to imagine a road-going variant of the TR010 akin to that of the Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion, or the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, which were built in the ’90s and sold to paying customers by the automakers to meet with period GT1 regulations that required each entered car to be based upon a street-legal production car of which at least 25 units had been built.

Such a thing could theoretically be produced in extremely limited numbers and sold only to loyal VIP clients—the kind of clients who bought the Lexus LFA when it was new and who probably have allocations for GR GTs right now. Theoretically, it could further underscore Toyota’s Gazoo Racing expansion in the public eye. The GR brand, at its core, is a way for Toyota to inject its road car lineup with a small yet potent dosage of motorsport-bred performance, and what better way to get that point across than to, quite literally, offer customers a street-legal version of the brand’s actual racing car?
Plus, with the specs that it could have—a twin-turbo V6 sprinkling over 600 horsepower to all four of its rubber donuts, paired with a sub-2000-lb curb weight—this thing might even put some of Ferrari’s most exclusive road-going hypercars on notice. Yes, developing a GT1 homologation special in the big ’26 is an absolutely egregious proposition, and it’d be an entirely unreasonable thing for Toyota to do, but that only underlines the level of shock value that building something could deliver for the brand. I know a few too many Toyota fanboys firsthand whose life trajectories would be forever altered if something like this were to actually exist someday (myself included).

Final thoughts: Which one would you like to see next?
If this wild, street-legal Toyota TR010 Hybrid is something you’d like to see on a road near you one day, I’d love to hear your other ideas for future projects. Does a road-going GMR-001 tickle your fancy? Do you ever wonder what a modern Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion would look like? Feel free to share your ideas in the comments, and, as always, thanks for reading!
