A few major players in the SUV game were singled out recently as part of a government-issued test to detect
vehicles’ rollover potential. The rear-wheel-drive Ford Explorer model, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Mercury Mountaineer,
and Toyota Tacoma extended-cab pickup all made it up onto two wheels during a series of sudden sharp turns. The brutal
swerving was meant to mimic the actions taken by drivers during emergency maneuvers, such as when a vehicle begins to
drift off the roadway and a driver tries to quickly recover. G.M. claims drivers, not their SUVs, are at fault, saying
the dominant causes of the crashes and their injuries are “…excessive vehicle speed; impaired driving due to alcohol,
drugs, fatigue and distraction; and failure to wear seat belts.”
