You have to admire the chief of a major automaker for going against the tide. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn told a
gathering of U.S. car dealers that hybrids are not the right move for automakers in today’s world of high costs.
Ghosn’s comments are in direct opposition to the thinking among most of his peers. Of course Nissan will be releasing
an Altima hybrid in the next year but Ghosn says that is strictly to meet stringent California guidelines and is not
part of the company’s future policy on alternative fuels. Ghosn also bashed the hydrogen contingent saying that it will
be years before costs will come down enough for mainstream consumption. It’s straight talk like this that made Nissan
one of the fastest growing automakers in the U.S. last year.
