First it was transponders, now it’s radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. The Texas Department of Transport
announced today that it plans to use the
provocatively named “eGo Plus” RFID tags in its wireless payment program for toll roads.
Two million (!) of the RFID tags will be issued to motorists across the state over the next 2 years. The tags are
designed to work with any of the Texas toll road systems to allow on-the-fly wireless payment.
The eGo tag is a paper-thin windshield sticker with a unique
identifier that cannot be copied. The tag does not require a battery, and can be read by any RF reader within a
31.5-foot range.
