Honda redesigns its hybrid powertrain

Honda’s IMA technology has not had the same success as Toyota’s Synergy. Honda’s hybrids do not have the same level of popularity with consumers, and unlike Toyota, Honda does not resell its IMA technology to other automakers. Part of the problem was the inability to run solely on the electric motor. In addition to the new 1.8-liter fours, the next generation Civic will get a new hybrid powertrain. The new hybrid system will be smaller, lighter, cheaper and produce more power than the previous system. Expect the new powertrain to match that of the 1.8-liter gasoline while giving improved gas mileage. The new system will also allow power to be provided by the electric motor alone at low speeds.
