The Detroit News reported today that GM is
cutting production of Pontiac’s G6 sedan by more than 10 percent because of disappointing sales.
The heavily
promoted G6 (remember the Oprah Winfrey giveaway?) was intended to be a key step in the revival of the Ponitac brand,
but competition in the midsize market segment seems to have been heavier than GM expected.

Analysts believe
that Pontiac made a mistake debuting the 4-door sedan before the more popular coupe. Nonetheless, the car has been
doing much better than the rental-fleet-favorite Grand Am it replaced. The new G6 hardtop convertible is
slated to reach dealers later this year, and may generate some much-needed buzz in the marketplace.
