Overview
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser is a midsize SUV nowadays, a smaller, modernized off-road vehicle compared to the previous full-size J200 Series generation with its big gas V8 that we had up until MY2021. This generation is technically the Land Cruiser Prado J250 Series, and it shares its architecture with the Lexus GX. A turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid replaces the previous V8 and produces 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. A two-row, five-passenger configuration eliminates third-row seating. Key competitors include the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and Honda Passport. The Land Cruiser midsize approach places capability and efficiency ahead of size.

What’s New for 2025
The First Edition model from 2024 has been discontinued. The new base Land Cruiser 1958 Edition features round headlights and fabric seats. The higher trim, just called “Land Cruiser”, has rectangular headlights and leather seating. Both retain full-time four-wheel drive, locking differentials, and the four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain as standard equipment. Three-row seating is still not available. Heritage Blue is added to the paint palette this year.

Exterior
Boxy, upright styling channels historic Land Cruiser heritage. A large TOYOTA-scripted grille dominates the front fascia. Square mirrors and athletic fender flares create a purposeful look. The 1958 Edition uses round headlights, while the Land Cruiser trim uses rectangular units. Both trims ride on 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. Color-selectable Rigid Industries LED fog lights are available on the Land Cruiser trim and switch between white and yellow beams.

Interior
The cabin balances utility with comfort through a clean, durable layout. The 1958 Edition includes fabric seats, while the Land Cruiser trim adds leather seating with heating and ventilation. Standard equipment includes a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. However, the model remains as a five-passenger vehicle, as no third row is available in the US.
The Premium package adds a moonroof, a head-up display, and a cool box. An 8.0-inch touchscreen comes standard on the 1958 Edition, while the Land Cruiser trim receives a 12.3-inch display. Cargo capacity reaches 46.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats and expands to 82.1 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Verdict
The 2025 Land Cruiser reinvents itself as a right-sized SUV that keeps its reputation intact as an off-roader, but is not without its flaws. Downsizing places it against the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, rather than full-size SUVs. It shares its platform with the Lexus GX, offering proven fundamentals, while the 250 Series Prado heritage brings decades of global use.
The turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid produces 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque and replaces the thirsty V8. EPA ratings reach 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, a major improvement over the prior 13 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined, although real-world results land between 19 and 21 mpg.
Full-time four-wheel drive comes standard with locking rear and center differentials. Low-range gearing, Crawl Control, and hill-descent control handle serious terrain, and Multi-Terrain Select offers six off-road modes. An available stabilizer disconnect mechanism increases wheel articulation. Testing against Bronco Sasquatch and Wrangler Rubicon shows the Land Cruiser matching capability without getting stuck.
The two-row layout reduces versatility, but a 6,000-pound towing capacity exceeds key rivals. A ten-year hybrid warranty and two years of complimentary maintenance strengthen long-term ownership.
