Overview

Yes, it’s still alive. The 2026 GMC Savana full-size van has been spared to see its 31st model year and soldiers on to fight another day, with rumors of its death last year greatly exaggerated. This is a stunning achievement in automotive longevity, yet it still goes unchallenged at the price for sheer capability, with a maximum towing capacity topping 10,000 pounds, backed by tough body-on-frame construction, reliable powertrains, and two powerful naturally aspirated gas engines – a 276-hp V6 and a 401-hp V8.

It’s almost completely devoid of features, with hardly any advanced safety assists and no touchscreen, but what it lacks in refinement and modern tech, it makes up for in simplicity and the ability to be serviced at almost any shop in the country. With a seating capacity of up to 15 people, it’s an ideal van for churches, shuttle services, and organizations needing group transportation.

What’s New for 2026?

The 2026 Savana gets no changes except for price increases of around $800 to $1,100, depending on the variant. The destination fee also increases from $1,995 to $2,395 for 2026.

Exterior

The Savana’s familiar boxy profile has defined American full-size vans for decades, and is immediately recognizable simply because it’s become so commonplace on our roads. Form follows function, with flat sides and sharp angles to maximize interior volume and simplify repairs. The fascia houses a typical GMC grille and straightforward headlights.

The Savana comes in cargo van, passenger van, and cutaway configurations, the former two available in two body lengths – either with a 135-inch or a 155-inch wheelbase. You can order the passenger van with 60/40-split swing-out doors for easy access, along with rear swing-out cargo doors. Optional assist steps make it easier for passengers to board.

Interior

The Savana is starkly simple inside, with flat planes, lots of hard black plastic, and no touchscreen in sight, but the chunky controls are easy to use. The analog gauge cluster – just a big speedo and a few ancillary gauges – is easy to read. The AM/FM stereo can play MP3s, and you get regular AC, though rear AC can be added to the passenger van. There’s plain vinyl on the floor and seats, and you can delete the front passenger seat entirely in the cargo van.

Up to 12 people can be accommodated in the standard version, with an additional row adding another three seats in the long-wheelbase version. The cabin can be upfitted for various commercial applications, like adding a wheelchair lift.

6.6L V8401 hp464 lb-ft8-speed HD automaticRWD

Performance and Capability

The 276-hp 4.3L V6 is powerful enough for everyday use, and offers better fuel consumption than the 6.6L V8, but you’d want the V8 if you’re going to load the van to the hilt or want to make use of the 10,000-pound towing capacity. It transforms the Savana into a powerful workhorse that shrugs off hard work without breaking a sweat, making best use of the ample torque, and with a Tow/Haul mode for better towing performance with heavy loads and on long grades.

Fuel Economy (MPG)

The Savana is a full-size van, so it’s exempt fro federal fuel economy standards, so there are no EPA figures for it. Owners typically get between 10 and 14 mpg combined, depending on the engine and usage pattern.

6.6L V8N/AN/A~10-12 MPG (est.)

Towing and Payload

The Savana excels at payload capacity and towing, outperforming most rivals on these scores. It tows up to 10,000 pounds with the V8 engine in van format and 9,600 pounds as a passenger van. Payload capacity maxes out at 4,280 pounds. The maximum GCWR is 16,000 pounds.

Drivetrain

All Savanas are rear-wheel drive, with no AWD available for adverse conditions or snowy winters. The hill-hold assist prevents the van from rolling back when pulling away on steep grades, and an Eaton automatically locking rear differential is available to improve traction when necessary.

Verdict

The GMC Savana is the last of an old-school breed of commercial van with body-on-frame construction and proven naturally aspirated V6 and V8 engines. Over three decades, it’s proven to commercial operators and fleet managers that it can do the job reliably, year in and year out. Its impressive maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds exceeds most rivals, too. But this ability comes at a cost, and the Savana is crude, old-fashioned, and devoid of comforts, luxuries, in-cabin tech like touchscreens, and advanced safety features.

Still, it may be just what commercial buyers who are looking for maximum capability and endurance over frills, and at the 2026 GMC Savana’s price point of under $40K at the base level, it has no competition. Better hurry up, because after the 2026 model year, it will be dead for good.
