Overview
The Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV occupying the value corner of the segment, and crossing swords with rivals such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. It shares its body-on-frame underpinnings with the F-150 truck and the luxury Lincoln Navigator, but starts at just over $60K, making it a lot of car for the money. You get regular and long-body MAX variants with a maximum towing capacity of 9,600 pounds.
Motive power is provided by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 with either 400 or 440 hp, sending power to the rear or all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. With seating for up to eight occupants and a maximum cargo capacity exceeding 120 cu-ft, the Expedition has been a true American family hold-all for 30 years now.

What’s New for 2027
The 2027 Expedition is unchanged except for a new 30th Anniversary Edition package (above and below) to celebrate three decades of Expedition. It comes with 22-inch Ebony wheels, special badging, and a Salt Crystal Gray interior. The model will also be offered in the special Blue Ember paint color, originally reserved for the Mustang Dark Horse.
Exterior
The Expedition’s fearsome scale is instantly evident. The boxy proportions and high, bluff nose share styling cues with Ford trucks, complete with C-shaped DRLs and a large Ford logo on the grille. Active trims have Carbon Black finishes and 18-inch alloys, while the King Ranch is decked out in Sinister Bronze accents and 22-inch wheels, though huge 24-inch hoops are available. The Ford Split Gate divides the liftgate in two, with the fold-down lower section supporting up to 500 pounds. All-LED exterior lighting is used, and top trims gain LED fog lights.
Interior
The Expedition may be no Lincoln, but it is extensively decked out in its top trims, including heated and ventilated leather front seats and heated second-row seats. The Active has a 3-seater 2nd-row bench, but the other trims’ dual captain’s chairs are optional. The Ford Flex Powered Console is standard on top trims.
The tech offering is democratized, with a 24-inch panoramic and 13.2-inch center display standard across the board, complete with Wi-Fi. Top trims get 3rd-row USB ports, a wireless charging pad, and B&O premium audio, with 22 speakers in the King Ranch. Abundant cabin space extends to an adult-friendly third row and commodious trunk, which is even larger in the MAX.

Performance and 0-60 MPH
Despite its heft, the torquey EcoBoost V6 imbues the Expedition with plenty of fizz, enabling it to scoot to 60 MPH in 5.8 to 6.5 seconds in 400-hp format, depending on the body style, drivetrain, and as-tested weight. The 440-hp HO engine cuts that time to just 5.2 – 5.5 seconds.

Ground Clearance
The Expedition has 8.7 to 8.8 inches of ground clearance, but its sheer length and wheelbase limit how far this will take you; if you have off-road aspirations, the 4WD-only Tremor provides a generous 10.6 inches of clearance, but the size and weight of the vehicle will be the determining factor, so don’t try to keep up with a Bronco.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Spacious 3-row seating for up to eight
- Massive 24-inch panoramic display
- Powerful turbocharged V6
- Max 9,600-pound towing capacity
Cons:
- Below-average gas mileage
- Bulk complicates parking
- Touchscreen-heavy climate controls
Verdict
The latest Expedition doesn’t mess with a winning formula, and gives you maximum cabin and cargo space at a high-value price, with the Platinum being stellar value at just over $70K. Plenty of tech and screen real estate are standard, ride comfort is impressive for a ladder-frame SUV, Blue Cruise is standard, and the turbo V6’s performance is strong. Fuel consumption and bulk are downsides, but this is what you sign up for in this segment.
