General Motors and Michigan officials to make Detroit-area plant announcement today

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that officials from General Motors and the state of Michigan will make an announcement about the fate of five of the carmaker's plants later today. But while news of impending proclamations from the General tends to trigger visions of shuttered factories and furloughed workers these days, optimism remains high after GM spokesman Dan Flores was quoted as saying the announcement would have a "positive impact" on the unnamed facilities.

In fact, the WSJ reports that it expects General Motors to announce a $500 million initiative designed to upgrade two Michigan assembly plants, a pair of powertrain facilities, and a stamping factory.
