In many ways, the new Renault Twingo is a very old-school car. While its look and mechanicals are entirely modern, moving the engine to the back with rear-wheel drive harkens back to small, European cars of the '60s. The little Frenchman has a platform co-developed with Daimler and shares its underpinnings with the next-generation Smart. However, It also brings back some of the quirkiness to French cars that has been dwindling recently. Case in point: The way Renault created the hood opening.

Just knowing how to open the front is a puzzle, and as the guy in this video from demonstrates, things only get weirder from there. The host claims that the design is going keep owners from getting dirty, but that seems very dubious, or, more likely, sarcastic. We just love that French cars get to be legitimately odd again. Just scroll down and watch the video. You'll see.

A solution to a problem no one had.

I have not even speak Czech, but even I know - based on his facial expressions and body language - that he was being 100% sarcastic the whole time. The whole 'index finger wagging' was a dead giveaway.

Actually the host is using irony when stating that "you really do not get your clothes dirty" while leaning all over the hood.

Initially I thought you could pop open a refill nozzle from the front of the car... But no... It's way more complex.

Agreed, i was thinking kinda cool and simple so you avoid people that don't belong opening the hood (like my wife) from going into the engine bay. Not so, though. Got to love modern technology making stuff worse and harder to do.

Why make it simple when you can complicate it...?

I can just see people not closing this properly and having their hood flopping around.

Never have so many, conspired to do so much, to achieve so little...

I foresee a lot of missing hoods and dirty clothes with this thing. Horrible design.

Probably cheaper to make than a couple of hinges and a latch

Comes from the same people who thought it would be a good idea to place the spare under the car and the horn button on turn signal stalk.

Looks like a PIA to me! And that hoood system is bound to damage the body!!!

Wussy europeans not wanting to get dirty while doing light maintenance...meanwhile you're fiddling around with bug guts, bird crap, and general dirt on the hood and grille, not to mention spilling washer fluid on your hood if you don't use a funnel.
