Shelby Cobra vs. Super Snake – Click above to watch the video after the break

We submit to the record that the Shelby Cobra is the coolest American car ever to go into production. Whether or not you agree, there's no denying the fact that the car that Carroll built is a legend in both street and racing circles, and it was the first car from waving the Stars and Stripes to truly upset the German and Italian motorsports hierarchy. Impressive credentials, then.

But is the Cobra the fastest car ever to wear the Shelby badge? Ah, now that's an entirely different matter altogether, and one the boys from Hot Rod decided to put to the test. In one corner we have the incumbent 427 SC Cobra. Its challenger, bringing 750 supercharged horsepower to the ring, is none other than the 2011 Shelby GT500 Super Snake.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall... which is the baddest of them all? To find out, Hot Rod lined the two track-tuned beasts against each other for two separate tests: a road course and the drag strip. And the winner is? See for yourself in the video after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Jason!

Entertaining comparison, But i would rather have seen them test the supersnake vs the zo6 carbon.

If we say that the Super Snake is a good car, will Carroll finally go away and stop whoring out his name?

Personally, I'd take the old-school Cobra.

Even when it isn't quite as fast as the new SS, the sensation of speed has to be WAY the hell higher in the Cobra which to me is way more fun than some rather meaningless numbers. I rather be in a loud/fun car going 50, than a quiet/isolated car going 90.

The man is a legend and I hope Shelby stangs live on for along time to come.

Well hey, how many other cars can blow the doors off almost everything else on the road and still be comfortable and refined?
        Its all relative.

Compared to the original Cobra, the Super Snake is as quiet and luxurious as a Lexus.

And that's perfectly fine if that's what you want, but lets be honest here, if anyone can afford either of these cars, chances are its going to be their 2nd, 3rd or even 4th car, so "luxuries" such as a roof and sound insulation can be found in one of your other cars, leaving your "fun" car to be as raw as possible.

        @Hazdaz

Calling a Super Snake quiet is like calling Hitler a saint!

      Love, love, love the soundtrack.

The view at a 1:29 is pretty sweet too.

4000 lbs!? hhahaaha when are these guys going to learn. Thats bloody massive.
427 Cobra is the best car in the world and my favorite car hands down.
Blue with white stripes is what I want.
If you have an extra one that you are not using or are bored with, send it my way, I will take care of it for you.

The Super Snake is cool and all, but the 427 is a god.

When is the general public going to realize that cars are HEAVY and have always been!! Dodge, Ford and Chevy gets the brunt of the ignorance from clowns like you with their stuff today, yet Mercedes can sell an SL65 at 4700 lbs and its still "wicked" in the eyes of the uninformed. (look up what an S65 or even S63/E63 weighs LOL..even the C63 weighs 4000 lbs...)

A 1970 Chevelle SS 454, with no air bags, no abs, no safety - NOTHING except lap belts weighs 4100 lbs.

You want light? Buy a Miata....Nancy.

        F#Q YEAH!!! GOOD ONE
Well Nancy, Devilishpersona, or whatever your name is, the fact is that lightweight cars can do a lot more with much less power. So, your Miata example would be fair comparison against the base V6 Mustang. Now that would be worth seeing.

      Two great cars.
Wow. Seems to be much hare for the SS. Agreed it has gobs of horsepower/torque and needs a better way to put it to ground but riddle me this.

If the SS gets beat by the Cobra its a travesty. A waste of 40 years of automotive technology and advancement.

What then happens if the M3 gets beat by the Cobra. Is it still a waste 'cause ya know the lil ol' Mustang GT is all over the M3.... For half the price.

      Haters gonna hate.

how do you lose on track with huge horsepower advantage

        lol

the reason i said this is

super snake suspension should be be way more advanced then old shelby cobra

you wouldnt see old 911 losing to the new boxster

        etc..

        @ yaroukh
        140.5 - 139.9 = .6 not 1.5 s
It only lost by about a second and a half. Not bad at all in my book.
Mike, I'm guessing you've never tracked a car? You'd be surprise how many hi-po cars get embarrassed by weakling Miatas.
Because carrying 1500 extra pounds does hurt when tackling corners.
Was anyone else bummed by the fact the video still was a spoiler?
If i ever win the lotto, Im gettin me a Super Snake for sure.

props for using a christina aguilera quote to describe these insanely cool cars, that takes balls....
waow, nice looking cars but quite worrying result for the mustang. 50 years of automobile evolution to be slower than an AC cobra...
well I have a caterham R400 for trackdays. cheap and really quick (1000lbs) but it is still an old design with tubular chassis. an heavier ferrari scuderia can keep up with it. better engine response, better chassis balance, better precision, electronic etc..

just look at the driver of the cobra sliding all over the place in corners, the old thick tyres. it is a 40 year old design modernised.
and this test just shows that the mustang is the same kind of car : lots of power to make it go fast but modern solutions should compensate it weight...and it doesn't.

        @Pi,

Do you not know anything about cars and how they are raced? Please tell me you are joking?

The S/C Cobra weighs 2000lbs and the SuperSnake almost 4000lbs.
