Ford Racing Mustang FR500S – Click above for high-res image gallery

It doesn't seem too long ago that Ford launched the "poor man's racer" FR500S Mustang and the Mustang Challenge Series at SEMA in 2007, and already it's coming to an end. The series announced that the September race at Miller Motorsports Park will be the last, although the FR500S will still be sanctioned for various other racing series.

No specific reason was given for the ending of the series, but our best guess is that it was due more to the slow economy than a lack of enthusiasm. Everyone involved, from the drivers to the sponsors to Ford all seem sad that the Mustang Challenge will be ending.

"We are disappointed to not continue what we started with the Mustang Challenge," said Series Director Lynda Randall. "But we should hold our heads high, as this was a tremendously successful program and we were fortunate to get to be a part of what really became a family." You can read more about the series over at Mustang Challenge.com, or you can click through the high-res gallery of the FR500S below.

Oh noes! Now there are less chances for Drew Phillips to bring us the latest on mustang news.

It's probably just me but, the last generation Mustang looks so much better than the new one.

This race series wasn't intended to draw a crowd of spectators, it is a spec series for the racers, much like most SCCA, NASA, and other regional clubs. It also was a bit of a feeder into Grand Am for up-and-comers.

That was supposed to be for Edgar on the first set of responses, stupid commenting system.

One make series are dull anyway. I'd rather see Mustangs battle with other makes, especially the Camaro, and the Challenger, if anyone gets one on the track.

In order for you to come up with that conclusion, you would had to of seen this on TV. Which, by the way, is impossible since the Mustang Challenge has never been televised.

I have a feeling this won't be the last time we hear from the Mustang Challenge Series. It'll have a return once Ford Racing builds an FR500C based on the 2011.

Agreed, I have never seen one, and I accept that it's a great affordable way to get into racing and develop new talent but I sense it's probably better for the drivers than the spectators though, and that could be why it was killed. Still a shame regardless.

        @NinetySixVert

Funny you say that. I'm an avid watcher of HD Theatre and have not once seen a promo for the Mustang Challenge or have ever seen it listed on the guide. Although, they do show glimpses of it during channel recognitions.

By the way, if you want to see Mustangs, Challengers, and Camaros going at it, watch the Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge.

Have you seen one of these races? I bet not. I think you missed the big picture on this one. The one make race be it this miatas S2000s what ever are meant to be a form of cheap racing. I know you have never raced one of these type of series so I wont bother going into how much fun it is when you are driving in one.

They have the world challenge/TC from speed channel if you want to see different makes going at it.

No worries, we just got this car in iRacing, you can still race it there :)

As good as this series may have been, I don't think it got much publicity. Ford should probably consider taking a break and gathering ideas to figure out how to get some attention to the series.

      Hey Elmo,
FYI Ford already has a replacement on the track for the FR500C, it's called the 302R....
Way to keep your finger on the pulse..................
