The 35th anniversary Mazda MX-5 is stunning. The burgundy paint and beige top are an absolutely gorgeous combination. And that matching leather interior? Incredible.
But, it’s not perfect. In fact, there are a few things we wish were different about Mazda’s latest anniversary edition vehicle.
The MX-5 needs more fun colors!
We absolutely adore the burgundy–sorry, “Artisan Red Metallic”–and tan combo. It’s timeless. Not everyone will agree, though.
Many are clamoring for the old red hue from the turbocharged, Mazdaspeed days of the Miata. Mazda wants to be seen as a more mature company, but there’s nothing wrong with running it back for an anniversary edition!
An anniversary edition is unique, and we’re not asking to be able to get it in any colorway–but a few special options would be great. After all, the burgundy is already available on the CX-90.

The interior could use more configurations
We’d love to see Mazda offer some racing-inspired seats and maybe a few steering wheel options. Being able to swap in a wood steering wheel, alone, would be an instant upgrade for many buyers, I’m sure.
We don’t want too many unnecessary options, but a few choices here and there would make this car feel a lot more unique. As-is, you’re buying a single-spec vehicle in a unique color (sort of).
It could have been priced more cleverly
The 35th Anniversary Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata (what a mouthful) costs $36,250. That’s actually pretty incredible. As Alanis King cleverly points out, Mazda has dropped the Miata price when you account for inflation.
We’re already getting a great deal–so why not make it a cool $35,000 out the door, Mazda?!
An anniversary edition vehicle is meant for die-hard fans who love it. $36,250 feels like Mazda is trying to hit a profit margin, and we’re just not here for that on anniversary editions. For something as significant as a 35th anniversary, Mazda’s pricing should be a fun little nod to fans. There are only 300 available in the United States anyway.
Sorry, Mazda–big miss on pricing, here.

Throw in an exciting day at the track
Mazda is hinting at a special treat for those who purchase a 35th-anniversary edition vehicle, but they haven’t confirmed details just yet. We suspect Mazda hasn’t totally finalized these plans.
We hope it’s a track day experience. The new MX-5 Miata promises to be a blast to drive. We’d love to see owners be able to rip one around a track like the Las Vegas Speedway, alongside a professional driver, before returning home to take delivery of their newly purchased anniversary editions.

Final thoughts
The 35th Anniversary Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata will surely be a timeless classic. Over time, its beauty and scarcity will make it a collector’s item; we’re sure of that much.
And, if we had just one more wish for this anniversary edition vehicle, it would be more of them. 300 is just too few. 350 for $35,000 each would have been something special, though.
