The luxury coupe segment is barely alive
The luxury coupe class has been thinning over the past decade as buyers gravitate toward SUVs and trucks. These small, somewhat practical cars boast plenty of lavishness and typically have a lot of performance to go with them. A couple of strong examples include the Toyota GR Supra and Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 Coupe, both of which bring their own sense of style and performance to the table.

However, there is one luxury coupe that stands out a little more, especially for those who value driving engagement over cruising. That car is the 2026 BMW M440i Coupe, which slots neatly between the more sedate 430i and M4 models in the lineup. The BMW M440i splits the difference between the two by offering a lively turbocharged engine and a sports suspension to complement it.
That power comes at a hefty price, though. The BMW M440i has a starting price of $65,050, which makes it a little less expensive than the Mercedes-Benz and nearly $10,000 more than the Toyota GR Supra. In that case, is the BMW M440i worth its price of entry?

The BMW M440i seamlessly blends performance and luxury
As you might expect, the 2026 BMW M440i is a very luxurious car. Inside, the M440i has a clean dashboard layout with a minimalist appeal. Its leather-wrapped, flat-bottom steering wheel gives it a racecar-like feel, while its large 14.9-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital gauge display make the interior feel more tech-savvy. Both of those displays run on BMW’s iDrive 8.5 infotainment software, which is the latest version of the system.
The interface is said to be more streamlined than before, which equates to fewer sub-menus from the home screen and easier access to apps and other functions. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and onboard navigation are all standard, but the wireless phone charging pad and Wi-Fi are optional add-ons.

The BMW M440i’s leather sport seats offer plenty of support for the driver and passenger while keeping them warm in the winter months with their heating function. The steering wheel is heated as well, and the whole cabin is automatically climate-controlled. There is even a rear seat that can accommodate two people, provided they are on the shorter end of the height spectrum.
The car’s sloping roofline cuts down on the rear-seat passenger’s headroom, which is to be expected from a coupe. All of this sportiness is backed up by the M440i’s raw performance, which comes via a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that generates 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to BMW, that setup can rocket the M440i up to 60 mph from a stop in only 4.6 seconds in rear-wheel-drive guise. The all-wheel-drive model drops that time to 4.2 seconds.

What are the BMW M440i’s closest rivals?
By comparison, the 2026 Toyota GR Supra is powered by a BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that produces 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. It also comes standard with an eight-speed automatic, but a six-speed manual transmission is also available. Toyota says that the Supra can hit 60 mph in only 3.9 seconds, which gives it a leg up over the BMW M440i in the performance department, but the Supra’s interior isn’t as plush or accommodating.

Toyota
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 coupe, on the other hand, poses more of a threat to the BMW with its similarly luxurious interior space and seating configuration. The Mercedes has similar luxury features and even performs just as well. Under its hood is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that’s paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid setup. The combination churns out 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, which is good for a 0-60-mph time of 4.2 seconds. It also comes standard with a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

Final thoughts
The luxury coupe segment may be dwindling, but there are a few entrants that make it worth some consideration. The Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 coupe and the Toyota GR Supra are both worthy contenders in the segment as they cater to two opposite ends of the driving performance and luxury spectrum.
However, the 2026 BMW M440i splits the difference between the two by offering buyers impeccable craftsmanship, which pairs well with its engaging driving performance. Ultimately, considering how well-executed the BMW M440i is, we think it’s worth every penny buyers will spend on it.
