The Volvo S60 will depart from our shores soon
The 2025 Volvo S60 returns to the dwindling midsize sedan segment for another year with upscale amenities and subdued styling at a competitive price. Unfortunately for the Volvo S60 sedan, the United States largely leans towards crossovers and SUVs. As a result, the Swedish automaker is pulling the S60 from the American marketplace following the 2025 model year.

The Volvo S60 returns for the 2025 model year with a handful of mostly unremarkable changes. While the midsize sedan is also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, we’ll be focusing on the gas-only variant here. The base Core trim gets power folding headrests, while the range-topping Ultra, formerly Ultimate, model comes with an available Black Edition package.
Reason to love it #1: Crash ratings are top-tier
Volvo has a reputation for delivering top-tier results when it comes to crash and safety tests, and the S60 is no exception. The midsize sedan comes equipped with plenty of standard safety systems, including Road Sign Information, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, and Lane Keeping Aid. Upgrading to the mid-level Plus trim will net you Pilot Assist, as well as Park Assist on all sides of the S60.

Naturally, such a vast array of safety tech paired with industry-standard safety features, like Traction Control and airbags, results in pretty high safety ratings. The Volvo S60 doesn’t disappoint for the 2025 model year, earning a top five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It also earned top marks in every crash test the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety performs, save for the child restraint ease of use test.
Reason to love it #2: Premium audio systems
Volvo’s designs have been pretty slick, and the S60 midsize sedan reinforces that reputation. The model’s audio systems, in particular, make the car stand out. A Bowers & Wilkins high-fidelity audio system comes standard and includes 15 speakers backed by a fresh-air subwoofer. The system features ‘Room Transformation’ technology that allows you to change the acoustics to resemble different rooms, such as a studio, concert hall, and jazz club.

If the Bowers & Wilkins audio system isn’t up to your standards, you can opt for the Harman Kardon premium sound system on the Ultra trim. The 14-speaker sound system includes an air-ventilated subwoofer, a 600W digital amplifier, and unique sound processing software to optimize each speaker’s response.
Reason to love it #3: Available from $42,600
The 2025 Volvo S60 starts at $42,600, giving it an edge in price over competitors. The Alfa Romeo Giulia, for example, starts at $43,995, while the BMW 3 Series is available from $45,950. There are only a handful of luxury cars that can even compete at the Volvo S60’s price point, with the $42,500 Genesis G70 being the Volvo’s closest competitor.

Reason to love it #4: Last chance to buy new
Sedans are going the way of the dinosaur, and the Volvo S60’s time has come. The midsize sedan is leaving the United States market following the 2025 model year. Volvo will still offer the sedan in other markets, but there are no imports planned to our shores for the time being. The Swedish automaker officially ended production at its Indiana facility last June, so the last of the S60s are already on dealer lots. If you want a new model, now is likely your last chance.

Reason to think twice #1: The gas model lacks power
The Volvo S60 comes stocked with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That combination delivers a respectable 247 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with front-wheel drive, the S60 hits 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, while AWD models do it two seconds quicker. Upgrading to AWD will cost you an additional $2,300, though.

Even with 247 horsepower under the hood, the Volvo S60 isn’t as quick as some competitors. The 2025 Alfa Romeo Giulia taps 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds when equipped with all-wheel drive. The BMW 3 Series performs better in the race to 60 mph, too, with the base model making the run in 5.6 seconds.
Reason to think twice #2: Trunk space falls behind competitors
Sedans typically don’t have much in the way of storage space, and that makes the trunk an important part of the car to consider. When it comes to trunk space, the Volvo S60 offers just 11.6 cu. ft. of space. That puts it behind several competitors, including the Alfa Romeo Giulia, which offers 13.4 cu. ft. of space, and the BMW 3 Series, with a trunk capacity of 16.9 cu. ft.

Final thoughts
If you’re looking for an upscale midsize sedan that undercuts its luxury competitors, the 2025 Volvo S60 might be the car for you. If you value performance, however, the BMW 3-Series, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and Audi A4 make for competitive sedans with price tags comparable to that of the Volvo S60.
