I Drove The 2027 Volvo EX60 Ultra: Here’s My Honest Review Of Volvo’s Stylish New Electric Luxury SUV

Its long range is one of the 2027 Volvo EX60 Ultra’s biggest draws. I drove it to see how its design, tech, and everyday comfort measure up.

Key Points

  • The 2027 Volvo EX60 Ultra combines 503 horsepower, luxury, comfort, and impressive electric range.
  • A 250-kilometer mountain drive left nearly half the battery charged, despite spirited driving.
  • Exceptional design and safety impress, though screen-based controls, key-card operation, and pricing pose drawbacks.

One spectacularly sunny autumn morning, I decided to take a drive out of the city, up into the mountains, from Vancouver, British Columbia, to the luxurious ski-resort town of Whistler, just to get a bacon breakfast sandwich; and, of course, to see what the EX60’s hype was really all about. I had some good fun on the Sea-to-Sky Highway on the way up, using all 503 horsepower where appropriate, devoured a delicious brunch at Provisions, then turned around and drove straight back home—a roughly 250 km (160-mile) round trip over twisty, hilly terrain with picturesque views. When I returned to Vancouver, the 2027 Volvo EX60 Ultra still had 49 percent of its charge remaining. What single number in an EV review could be more useful to me than that?

It may sound a bit extreme, but that is genuinely the kind of outing I’d make if I owned one. Why not take all the drives you want, whenever you want, when neither gas prices nor range anxiety are a factor? I didn’t try to eke out a headline range figure by being gentle; I squeezed out plenty of the EX60’s impressive performance along the way, never once worrying about anything more than which direction the road would meander next, all while cruising in sublime comfort and near-absolute silence. To really impress me, the Volvo simply needed to make a familiar road worth driving, and the battery had to afford me enough freedom to do something else when I got home, without having to charge it up all over again. The EX60 ticked those boxes and then some.

Powertrain & Driving Dynamics: 9.0/10 — Eats Up Miles For Breakfast

The dual-motor EX60 packs plenty of power—503 horses, to be exact, backed by 524 lb-ft of torque. Once you’ve stomped the accelerator a few times and felt the thrill of those sudden, impactful jolts, the most valuable parts of the EX60’s dynamics are how much control you have as a driver and how naturally you can operate it without ever worrying about battery range. The Sea-to-Sky is a spectacular road that I enjoy driving—it is no mere commuter chore—and I could fully enjoy it in the Volvo without making a game of the efficiency display to stop myself from sweating over whether I’d have enough electricity to get back home without stopping to charge. Especially in its P10 dual-motor guise, the EX60 has more than enough get-up-and-go for any situation, and its all-wheel-drive system makes traction loss a non-issue in almost any condition; the only real drawback was its hefty body roll.

My tester had the optional 22s, so it’s rated for “just” 312 EPA miles, or 502 kilometers on the Canadian cycle. With 20- or 21-inch wheels, the P10 AWD is rated at 330 EPA miles or 531 Canadian kilometers. The larger wheels trade away 18 rated miles, or 29 km, roughly 5% of the smaller-wheel rating. Even on the 22s, though, which look spectacular, I finished a spirited mountain round trip with nearly half the battery still leftover. For my own use, that makes a persuasive case for the EX60: impressive driving dynamics you can take full advantage of without feeling guilty or worrying about running out of battery, thanks to its even more impressive range.

Technology: 8.5/10 — Gemini Gets It. The Mirrors Take Some Explaining.

Google Gemini was quick enough that I actually used it, though I’m not entirely convinced it’s much more than a typical voice-command system with faster response times. Although far too many commands that could otherwise have buttons—such as side mirror adjustment—are integrated into the central infotainment display, the display was surprisingly good at hiding fingerprints on such a massive screen that Volvo asks you to touch it so often. My favorite bit of technology, though, was simpler than the otherwise more dramatic highlights. The reverse camera automatically zooms in as you get closer to objects, and the depth line makes it much easier to judge how much space is left behind the car. The EX60 has one of the most helpful and impressive parking camera systems I’ve ever used in an automobile. Another highlight was the incredible Bowers & Wilkins sound system in my tester, with 28 speakers and an impressive 1,820-watt power output.

The same cabin makes adjusting the mirrors and other traditionally simple tasks a screen-based chore that requires navigating submenus to complete. I figured it out easily enough, but it was involved enough that I’d have to pull over to do it. A dedicated switch would let me find the control by feel, meaning I could make minor alterations on the fly. Perhaps the most egregious tech redundancy is the card key I used, which has roughly the same dimensions as a credit card. I had to pull it out of my pocket and tap it against the glass to unlock the car, and place it on the reader to start the car, which was especially annoying, since the reader is in the same location as the wireless device charger, which meant I always had to put the car in “Drive” before setting my phone down. Thankfully, Volvo offers a proximity key for an additional cost, but I think it should have been standard equipment—that card key only made things more complicated. Lastly, I could also clearly see the camera above the center display pointed back at me at all times. Volvo’s owner’s manual says two cameras track driver behavior without recording it, but I still found the visible lens a little too Orwellian for my liking.

Exterior Design: 9.5/10 — The Face Still Says Volvo, Even Without A Grille

The EX60 looks unmistakably electric, and yet it still looks unmistakably like a Volvo. That’s harder to pull off than it sounds when you take away the upper grille, but the broad panel across the nose feels like it was drawn that way from the start, and the Volvo badge and diagonal slash still give your eye somewhere to land naturally. The Thor’s Hammer lights then draw your attention outward, and the dark lower intake affords the front end a solid base. From a low front three-quarter angle, the nose flows cleanly into the front fenders, and you can see why the face works as a whole.

What makes it feel Scandinavian to me is how much Volvo gets from just a few details. The side glass reads as one clean sweep, aided by subtle, winglike door handles, and the pronounced front arches and deep crease low in the doors give the body some character. Those surfaces look especially enticing in Aurora Silver, which reads cool and silvery at first glance, then picks up a faint magenta hue as you move around the car, especially in autumn light, giving the otherwise minimalist body a unique sense of depth beneath its surface. It’s the kind of paint I’d want to see in person before picking it from a digital configurator.

The optional 22-inch wheels are sharp, too. Their bright faces catch the light, while the dark pockets make the spokes look finer, and they fill the arches without overwhelming the rest of the car. The smaller wheels make a case for themselves on range, as I found when comparing the ratings, but every time I stepped back to photograph this one, I could see exactly why I’d be tempted by the 22s.

Interior Design & Quality: 9.5/10 — In Defense Of The Dentist’s Office

I’m tired of hearing that an interior looks like a dentist’s office, as if the décor were the bad part about having cavities filled. I dislike the poking and prodding and the latex-laden fingers in my mouth, not how sanitized the interior design looks through those chunky sunglasses they always make you wear. If anything, the bright, clean waiting room is often the most calming part of the visit, especially when the seats are comfortable enough to feel where all that dental plan money really goes, and when you can best appreciate how obsessive-compulsive the people who look after your health and well-being are. I appreciated the same quality in the EX60’s pale Dawn cabin, which may be somewhat minimalist, but never felt cold. The textured gray trim gives the eye something to settle on, and I’d take it over another slab of glossy piano black any day.

On top of that, I’ve never felt as safe and sheltered from the outside world, or from potential accidents, as I do in a Volvo, especially this one. After all, we’re talking about the automaker that invented three-point seatbelts, crumple zones, and side curtain airbags, just to name a few. That dedication to safety is clearest in the EX60, where state-of-the-art active safety tech blends with cutting-edge collision-safety innovation to create a cocoon-like experience that adds immeasurable peace of mind.

The detail I appreciated most, though, was the armrests. They’re placed exactly where my elbows want to land while I hold the steering wheel, so I can rest them and still drive naturally. A sound system like the excellent Bowers & Wilkins gets top billing on an equipment list, but I’d rate the armrest positioning almost as highly; they massively improve comfort, whereas far too many cars have armrests that you can only really appreciate with one hand off the wheel.

Pricing & Value: 8.5/10 — What Does Ultra Get You?

Volvo’s Canadian press sheet lists this EX60 at C$85,500 before fees, with C$1,500 of that going toward the 22-inch wheels. For U.S. shoppers, Volvo announced the P10 AWD Plus at $60,750 and the P10 AWD Ultra at $67,350, both before destination. That puts $6,600 between them with the same powertrain. The price premium buys things you can touch, hear, and use, including ventilated Nappa leather, the Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and the dimmable panoramic roof.

The Cadillac Optiq is the one rival that would make me think twice. The AWD version is rated at 303 miles, only nine shy of the EX60 I drove on 22s, and it costs less. The Genesis Electrified GV70 Prestige, however, makes the Volvo look like the better value. It starts at $75,350 in the U.S., and even the longest-range Electrified GV70 gets just 263 miles. Then there’s the Tesla Model Y Premium AWD at 327 miles, close to the 330 miles Volvo gets from the P10 on smaller wheels, so if range alone were deciding where my money went, I’d have a harder time making the case for the Ultra. The cabin is what makes me want to spend the extra cash, and it vastly outdoes the Tesla’s in terms of how premium it looks and feels.

The range that makes the EX60 so compelling is also available with the P10 in Plus trim, along with the 15-inch display and 360-degree camera system, though Plus comes with Bose audio. At their advertised prices, the Ultra upgrade costs about 11 percent more, so the case for spending it comes down to what you want from the cabin every day. The Bowers & Wilkins system made a strong case for itself while I was driving, and if I were already ponying up the pretty penny to purchase an EX60 P10 in the first place, I’d probably find it difficult to skimp out at the last minute on the finer details that really push the model into genuine luxury territory.

The Real Verdict: 9.0/10 — I’d Find Excuses To Drive This Volvo

There are things I’d change about the EX60. I’d put the mirror controls back where my hand expects them, and I wish starting the car with the key card I had were a simpler affair. What stuck with me after the drive was how easy it was to point this Volvo wherever I wanted it to go, just because I felt like going. I can admire an electric SUV for its design or its technology, but what the EX60 does goes beyond that—it transforms a uniquely Scandinavian luxury SUV experience into one with even fewer headaches than ever before. You never have to worry about fuel costs again or change your driving habits to work around a battery range that keeps you on your toes, all while enjoying the latest iteration of Volvo’s definition of luxury in a well-packaged SUV.

If you love the brand’s SUVs and are sick of paying so much for fuel but don’t want the added nerves of range anxiety, the plug-in hybrid XC60 is still a solid option, but if you simply want the best driving experience modern Volvo has to offer, wish to never visit another gas station again, and do enough weekly driving that less expensive, lower-range EVs won’t cut it, simply look no further than the all-new EX60. It is absolutely brilliant.
