The folks over at DigitalCorvettes.com have posted some documents that, if believed, show
that a supercharged LS9 6.2L V8 is set to debut in a Corvette in time for the 2009 model year. This, of course, would
be for some sort of ultra-high-performance model, often dubbed the “Blue Devil” and more recently thought to
be the Corvette
SS. The info is heavily redacted, but a little reading in between the thick black lines would lead one to think
that Eaton might be providing a supercharger/intercooler/intake module to GM for this engine (this makes a lot of
sense, considering that company’s currently established relationship with GM). At a claimed “600 HP and
560 ft-lbs”, it should be quite the monster – even before the easy modifications are performed.
Also interesting is the LS8 that’s shown on the timeline, which is a “480-500 HP” V8 that’s shown
replacing the LS7 for the 2011 model year. This represents a drop in power from the current Z06’s engine, but the fact
that it’s to be offered with an auto and manual (as well as the fact that it won’t be built at the
Performance Center) suggests that it will become the new base powerplant for the Vette. With a 500 HP Mustang soon to
hit the streets, such a boost in power is likely necessary to maintain the Corvette’s reputation as the best bang for
the buck in the $40-50K price range.
