Kia Motor Co. issued a recall for more than 20,000 Borrego SUVs because of problems with the brake pedal capable of breaking off during a collision.

The recall, issued Wednesday morning, effects 21,912 Borregos with non adjustable brake pedals made between May 2, 2008 and Jan. 20, 2009, according to documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Certain pedal mounts may have a fiberglass composition that allows them to break off in a collision where impact has not immobilized the vehicle, which could then allow the vehicle to roll,” the notice stated.

Kia began to look into the issue in October 2009 but did not have enough information to issue the recall until now, according to NHTSA documents.

Kia will begin notifying people who bought the SUV and dealers will replace the pedal mount free of charge. Owners can also contact Kia’s customer assistance center at (800) 333-4542 for information.
