Volga vanishing?

Russia’s Gorky Auto Plant (GAZ) is finally throwing in the vodka, says officials. The plant, the builder of the infamous Volga (pictured), will phase out production of the sedan as the domestic industry is pushed aside by American, European, and Japanese imports. The car had been a favorite among government officials (and a Russian stereotype in the movies). President Vladimir Putin, a Volga owner, had even President George W. Bush sitting behind the wheel of his Volga. Now a Toyota plant prepares to open near St. Petersburg while Renault builds its Logan models in Moscow. GAZ, though, will live on, building new trucks and vans.

Farewell, comrade!
