In my opinion the worst part of winter is not the abnormal amount of salt on the road or the massive potholes created by snow plows, it is shoveling my driveway. After certain snowfalls, I ponder how great it would be to not own any cars and have no reason to clear the driveway. The worst snow is the wet and sticky stuff which happens when the temperature is hovering around 0°C (32°F) before or after the snowfall. The buildup of snow of the shovel is the most frustrating part as eventually, you can’t even use the snow shovel to shovel the snow!

There is one brilliantly simple solution for this problem: WD-40. Just spray the face of the shovel with WD-40 and wait a couple minutes before shoveling (make sure the shovel is dry before applying the WD-40). The WD actually stands for ‘Water Displacement’ which effectively means it repels water. Now you can shovel without having to worry about snow buildup. Through personal experience, I have found that this works well for about three snowfalls before snow begins to stick again. Now, theoretically, you could use any oil or lubricant on a shovel to stop snow from sticking so if you don’t have any WD-40 lying around, just throw some vegetable oil on your shovels. You have now successfully turned your regular shovels into temporary non-stick shovels.

Now when it snows, you’ll be able to save some time by shoveling more efficiently. This means you’ll be able to get your car out of the driveway faster allowing you get more salt on your vehicle and more opportunities to drive over potholes! There is no denying the appeal there.
