A company called Key Safety Systems is responsible for the development of the TickerTape airbag, which is armed with
sensors to determine an occupant’s position so that it may inflate accordingly. The technology is especially important
for smaller or poorly-positioned adults, and children, all of whom may be injured by regular airbags inflating at full
strength. The TickerTape can adjust the amount of cushioning it provides and then deploy in about 10 milliseconds, a
tenth of the time it takes to bat an eye. Current “smart” airbag technology relies on seat-based sensors that analyze a
passenger’s weight and position, but which sometimes fail to deploy if a particularly light or small passenger is
detected.
