Last week, we told you about GM’s plans of launching the
Traffic Assist system on the 2008 Opel Astra that
utilizes lasers, video camera and a central computer to enable it to detect and avoid obstacles. Now, Honda has
developed a prototype called ASV-3 – Advanced Safety Vehicle, and the ‘3’ stands for this being the 3rd phase of this
Japanese government sponsored project. Similar to GM’s system, the ASV-3 uses cameras and radars to detect obstacles;
but unique to Honda, it’s also equipped with an intervehicle communication system as a back-up. And of course, the
principle difference between GM’s Traffic Assist and Honda’s ASV-3 is that GM’s goal is to have the vehicle drive
itself whereas Honda’s system will only provide signals and warnings to drivers while ultimately entrusting the people
to keep the driving experience safe.
