EPA to change testing procedures

Despite the fact that the
energy bill did not call for changes, the
Environmental Protection Agency plans to change the testing procedures for mileage. Spurred by hybrid
owners who complained after getting less than 40 miles per gallon when manufacturers told them
they’d be getting 50+, the EPA is changing its decades-old testing procedures in favor of tests that better
mimic “real world” driving. Included in the changes are increasing the average highway speed (currently at 48
mph) and factoring in more agressive driving habits, use of air conditioning, increased congestion in urban and
suburban areas.
