In a move that might get rid of some of the worst polluting cars in Southern CA, the South Coast Air Quality
Management District wants to use remote sensors and video cameras to identify these enviro-offenders as they drive the
highways and byways in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside. The owners of identified
vehicles would then receive a letter informing them that the state government will pay to fix or send their vehicle to
the junkyard. This program sounds a little invasive, but regulators lack any ability to force these polluters off the
road. In the end paying these people to retire their cars rather than handing out fines for driving them will most
likely better serve the environment.
