The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance is always a thing to behold, giving the concours participants a chance to exercise their cars and show that they’re in good working order – that they’re drivers in addition to being show queens. Our photographer Drew Phillips followed along yesterday to get rare shots of these very rare cars actually moving. And yes, that’s Sir Stirling Moss in a 300SL. He seems to always be in or near a 300SL during Monterey Car Week.
Normally, participation in the Tour d’Elegance gives a car an advantage when it comes time for judging at the concours on Sunday. Because of a revised route this year – with more low-speed driving that could provoke overheating issues – the judging advantage is being removed for this year. The change was made to keep the snake of tour cars from interfering with firefighters working to control a nearby wildfire. Seems pretty sensible to us.
This year’s tour covered 37 miles, including 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, and ended as it always does in Carmel, where the cars line the streets giving anyone up-close access. Click through the gallery above for a taste of the priceless awesomeness that was there this year.
