GM has announced the hybrid version of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC
Sierra will be made available nationwide beginning with the 2006 model year. The hybrid option, complete with
eight-year, 100,000 mile warranty on hybrid-related components, was available on the ’04 and ’05 Chevrolet Silverado
1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 in six states, including: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaksa, Nevada, and Florida.
The reviews thus far has been cautiously optimistic, applauding the inclusion of hybrid technology into a
widely-availble full-size truck, but noting the hybrid option decreased fuel consumption by only 10%. However, 10% is
enough to put the trucks toward the top of the full-size truck mileage ratings.
The truck utilizes a hybrid system that shuts down the gasoline engine under certain circumstances and then starts
it again instantly with a powerful electric starting mechanism, which from the reviews takes a little getting used to
in city traffic. Horsepower, towing and other performance specifications remain unchanged from standard versions of the
vehicle.
The truck seems like it would be of most interest to commercial customers who want to take advantage of a slight
mileage bump and the on-board generator that provides 20-amps of 120-volt power through outlets in the cab and bed for
up to 32-hours on a single tank of gasoline.
